Kate Hudson Gets Real About Having Three Kids With Three Different Men
Kate Hudson doesn't have a typical family situation — but it sounds like it's working just fine for her. In a new interview, the Marshall star opened up about what it's like to have three children with three different fathers and how her own relationship with her estranged dad has affected her life.
She shares her oldest son, 17-year-old Ryder, with her musician ex-husband, Chris Robinson, and her younger son, 9-year-old Bingham, with her ex-fiancé, Matt Bellamy, another musician. She also has a 2-year-old daughter, Rani Rose, with her current partner, Danny Fujikawa. Judging by her regular Instagram updates on her family, the three siblings enjoy an adorably close bond, and Kate maintains peaceful co-parenting relationships with her two exes.
"I've got multiple dads, I've got kids all over the place," she told host Willie Geist with a laugh.
Because her family dynamics can be difficult to navigate, she said she does put pressure on herself to make sure she gets it right.
"The only expectations I really have that are really high in my life are with my kids and with my family stuff," she explained. "Other than that, I just let it go. I do it, I work my a-- off, and then I walk away and I hope for the best."
She and her dad, actor Bill Hudson, have been estranged since she was a child. As a result, she and her brother, Oliver Hudson, were raised by their mother, Goldie Hawn, and stepfather, Kurt Russell. Kate and Oliver frequently delve into their sticky family issues on their podcast, Sibling Revelry.
"I think that estrangement is unfortunately quite common, and I think it's important for people to talk about that," Kate told Willie. "Sometimes we need a little bit of talk and humor to move us into places where we can heal some of the wounds that have affected us from our families."
When Willie asked Kate if her dad's absence from her life still gnaws at her, she conceded that it's been a lifelong — or, as she said — "a 41-year-old" issue. But she was quick to celebrate the people she does have surrounding her.
"I have a great family. I have a beautiful family, I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge, huge part in showing me what it is to have a dependable father figure," she explained.
She told Geist that the extra downtime at home with her kids has been both rewarding and challenging.
"I wanna be like, 'Yeah, it's so great and we're figuring it out,' but the reality is that there are days that are great, and there are days that I have to remind myself to be grateful," Kate noted.
"When you have so many kids, sometimes you have those moments where you're hiding in your bathroom going, 'Please, please, get me out of here!' But I just remind myself there are a lot of people out there who have lost their loved ones, and we just gotta stay in for a bit."
"I mean, I am a gypsy. I chose to be an actor, a traveler. I never thought in a million years that I'd spend an entire year in one place," said the Fabletics founder.
