Everything that is wrong with movies.

I discussed this with my girlfriend recently. The biggest problem with Hollywood these days is Stanley Tucci...and the fact that he is not in NEARLY enough movies. I can not name a movie that was not made better by his presence alone. Burlesque was a tolerable movie, but he was fantastic in each of his appearances. Easy A was a damn fine movie as it was, but adding Mr. Tucci just turned it up to 11. There is just not enough Stanley Tucci in movies.

No matter how good a movie is (I'm talking of the movies he's not in), I always find fault that there was not enough Stanley Tucci. There is never enough Stanley Tucci. The fact that he was not won a single Academy Award shows the influence of the Illuminati. And the reason for their interference is obvious: Jealousy.

Keep turning it up to 11, Mr. Tucci.

Know that, thank you, next question.
The Nameless Guy.

Thanks for the laugh, Nameless_guy!

I had no idea at first where you were going with the subject line, but where you ended up I thoroughly agree with. I love seeing Stanley Tucci's name in a cast list — even if nothing else about the film works, he gives me reason enough to watch it.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I can't remember ever seeing him in anything as a leading character, really. Do you think he's as effective in such roles or is he just a fantastic foil?

reply

Love it!

And I totally agree that he made Burlesque worth watching and was very memorable in Easy A. He and Patricia Clarkson played off each other beautifully.

Oh my god, this thread is amazing! It's giving me life.

There are few things as fetching as a bruised ego on a beautiful angel.

Ever since 2009, unlike 99% of actors, he is overexposed, he got a career revival from ,it seems, THe Devil Wears Prada, reminding people how diverse he can be,not just playing dry stiff guys like in the Terminal or Shall We Dance perhaps, but sharp,quick-witted,hilarious and completely serious while doing it,sarcasm and self-awareness to it.

Since 2009 he has been in either 3 or 4 films a year, and many have a fatigue of him, despite knowing he is good. He did 1 or 2 movies a year prior to 2009, with 2004 and 1996 being exceptions due to scheduling of the studios.

In part its due to scheduling these last 5 years, since lovely bones for ex had been filmed in 2007,but only came out in dec 2009 or so. In the last 10 years, last 5 years especially, hollywood has made it into a neat package of dull sterile predictable formulaic release schedules, where independence day weekend and last weekend of may and first weekend of summer movie season(early may), and lately mid-late april has become a prime target weekend due to fast and furious and clash of the titans etc, and since alice in wonderland and watchmen it is a specific weekend in march, for battle:Los Angeles, Hunger Games and an animation movie etc. thanksgiving, christmas weekends too obviously. Also mid-july has been a longstanding sweet spot for blockbusters to come out,due to most profit coming from releasing it then, like inception, batman, wolverine, captain america, pacific rim, etc

Stanley tucci is being part of films that the studios often decide to delay a year or so in order to get an optimal release date with minimum competition, and some of his movies like percy jackson, hunger games saga, transformers, captain america, jack the giant slayer - all tentpole films, and so they will not be released in a certain month if that month has too much competition, this is why they moved GI Joe 9 months later,to edit it,and find a slot that had less competition, not june 29th,where there was too much competition before, during and after it,before ice age 4, spiderman, batman , and after prometheus, men in black 3, brave etc. So he has overexposure due to being part of films that are just all released within a few months of each other, even if he filmed them 1 year apart etc.

And you posted on june 26th 2012, just 3 days before jack the giant slayer was slated to open originally. And then a few months before, even after marketing started, they realized it wasnt competition worthy for that summer date, and so they moved it to march 1st 2013, so Tucci has 6 movies within 9 months, that is overkill, his face everywhere, and no matter who the actor is,tom hanks, daniel day lewis, marlon brando, gary oldman ,seymour-hoffman(R.I.P) or tucci, overkill is overkill, just become numb to his appearances, havent yet gotten to shake off his last gig,and here he is in another movie, filmed 1 year earlier for him,but coming out all at once. Jude Law had the same problem in 2004,with 6 films within a few months. 2004-the Jude Law year. 2013- the Stanley Tucci year.

This would be a great argument if people saw every movie these "overexposed" actors are in, but as we know, they don't. In fact, I've only seen 3 movies in the last 5 years with ST. This makes the term "overexposed", and in fact "underexposed", 100% subjective.

reply

absolutely,no arguments there, totally subjective indeed. I just used to watch all tentpole films as well as serious dramas and most comedies in the cinema(or when the dvd was out),and since he was in so many,it was my experience. Not for everyone of course.

He is outstanding in Big Night in the leading role.
