Why all the Tobey hate?

...It's as if all the true Tobey fans never visit this board...

Well, I love Tobey, loved him when I first saw him in Wonder boys, loved Seabiscuit (still my favorite movie after 10 years), loved Spider-man of course (never thought he was bad in 3), loved Brothers, even Gatsby. I love his acting styles and his drive for self improvement.

So, what if he prefers a quiet life as a family man, what if he skipped signing a few autographs or taking pictures with the fans? Like Gary Ross once said, Tobey strives to be a better actor, not a movie star.

Maybe his quiet inner strength and his tightly controlled emotions on screen do not fit the loud flashy over-the-top trend in Hollywood, but his directors love him. Like Ang Lee said, it's all in the eyes.

In the movies, the camera catches everything, every subtle facial expression, every tiny muscle movement, every slight change in voice. We don't need them to act as if they are in a Shakespeare play. Tobey's acting is real and natural as can be, and for that people say he doesn't do anything, but it's all there: the emotional depth, the full understanding of the characters, and that's why I love him as an actor.

Thank you for the good words for Tobey, I love him too!

You've said it all best why we love Tobey Maguire as an actor. It's sad how he is not the typical Hollywood leading man. It's sad how we might never witness him getting the recognition he deserves as an actor. Jim Sheridan said he "appears like a swan on the surface". In close-up, you can tell there's a lot going on in his head, but he's a bit of a poker player because you're not exactly sure what he's thinking. Not my words. Jim Sheridan's words. Like you said his directors seem to like him and trust him.

Tobey has a high regard for the audience and the camera, that when he simply believes a thought, he knows the camera would record it and the audience would receive it. He doesn't play for the melodrama. He doesn't overact it. This is why his characters almost always look calmed down and acting the same way in every movie. Most actors in Hollywood don't work that way. Tobey is not always apparent, but neither are our emotions.

But one of my favorite positive things to read about him on the internet is how he has the best voice for storytelling! This is not a universal opinion either unfortunately. Many has said that they can't stand his narrating voice, I don't know why. But I think there's a reason why he's done a lot of narrating in movies he's in. He has that passionate voice to keep audience invested in the story he's about to tell. And maybe that is exactly his place in Hollywood. Like his character Nick Carraway. A reliable narrator whom we can identify with.

What does it matter what I think? What does it matter what anybody thinks? Most people don't think.

Thank you, friend, for reminding me of his voice. I love his narrating in The Great Gatsby. He purposely made his voice raspy and tired, so suitable for the role. Funny now I remember RDJ's line in Wonder Boys:"He's fine. He's narrating."

I don't know why there's so much hate. I personally love the guy.

People hate him because he's a major shithead:

In real life, Bloom wrote in her memoir that Tobey Maguire once offered her a $1,000 tip to bark like a seal that wants a fish and then stormed off when she refused. This seems to be in line with the tasteless persona of "Player X" in the Molly's Game movie. Bloom also wrote that Maguire "was the worst tipper, the best player, and the absolute worst loser."

This hate seems really weird to me.

As far as I'm concerned, Tobey is one of the best movie stars of his generation... only second to his buddy, Leo.

Oddly enough, I was talking about Tobey Maguire yesterday. One of my friend's cousins was an extra on Spiderman 3 and she said Maguire couldn't have been a bigger asshole to everyone. She said the extras wanted some autographs and Kirsten Dunst couldn't have been nicer but Tobey Maguire dismissed anyone that even bothered to go near him like a complete douche.

Exactly. I watched Spider-Man 2 a little while back (still a great movie), and noticed how subtle and nuanced his performance is in the movie. With certain scenes, you can tell he's holding back. A lot of actors usually are tempted to overdo it with the crying and screaming, but not Tobey. He holds it back and doesn't overdo it, and that's why he's been one of my favorites.

Thanks! Every time i come to this board, the first few posts are always some mindless hate about Tobey. It gets old and annoying.

Ditto. AlThough I love Tobey more, I think Leo is going to get an oscar before Tobey
