How come he was in so many disaster films?

Likely because he was a big guy (with a calm, laidback demeanour) which is why he tended to survive such disasters (as the end credits rolled)
Funny, because he tended to play 'heavies' in his earlier movies, but after his (Oscar-winning) turn in 'Cool Hand Luke', he pretty much played good guys (occasional leading roles, side-kicks and sheriff types)
Great answer, thanks 👍
