I have always like him. Good writer. Good call on most films.

Even when I didn't agree with him I always enjoyed reading what he had to say. He had a prodigious way with words.

Exactly. If he didn't like a film that I did, he always went into why it didn't work for him, rather than just dismissing it with Worst Film Ever!

Incredible writers create incredible works, mediocre writers create reviews. He was great among critics but not great.

As do I. He was simply great at writing and expressing himself. Very very few film critics/reviewers come remotely close.
