Imdb says she moved to South Africa but I thought she was born in S.A
Where does she think she's from??

reply

Yes, I saw her on an interview on one of her DVD's and she is English. She has the accent to prove it too. Good ole Enland

I read that she's American but grew up in South Africa.

The website for 'The Hole' had an interview in which she spoke with a hybrid South African-English-American accent, which appeared to be where her natural speaking voice has ended up. She had an English accent in the film itself.

She was born here in my hometown of Lafayette, IN but moved when she was very young to Africa.

I have heard Charlize Theron speak an African language on a talk show once. She doesn't seem to have an accent. Wasn't she born and raised in S. Africa as well?

reply

I went to Riverside High School in Vereeniging ( graduated 1991 ), South Africa with Embeth's sister Jennifer. I had the good fortune of meeting Embeth once during that period. She came across as a wonderfull, down-to-earth person, with a passion for the arts. Did I mention she's drop-dead gorgeous ..... ?

At that time, she was studying drama at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and was just beginning to break into mainstream acting.

Embeth and Jennifer have a wonderfull family. Their father , John, is a chemical genius and a man whose brain runs at twice the speed of us normal folk. Their mom, ( forgot her name ! ) was a nurse. They where a well travelled family, which explains why Embeth was born in the USA but grew up in South Africa. John even had a photograph of him with Albert Einstein in Switzerland.

Jennifer and I also attended the same University, the Potchefstroom University for CHE, where she completed a psychology degree. Her father was a chemistry professor at the university.

The last I heard, was that Jennifer had joined her sister in LA. That was a good ten years ago.

Thus, to keep to the topic, Embeth is one of South Africa's greatest actors and ambassadors. We're proud of her and wish her and her family all the best !!

GreetingS !

Her parents are English speaking South Africans (I think they might be Jewish). She was born in Indianna because her dad was studying at Purdue University at the time.

Theron actually learned to speak in the "American" way by watching US television shows. When she first arrived in the States, she spoke with a South African accent and couldn't get any work because of this. Her first language is Afrikaans, a language spoken in South Africa which has Dutch origins.
