He was definitely talented enough

No because he didn't have leading man looks or charisma. He probably would have had a decent and long career as a character actor.

Gotta say, when I hear the phrase "leading man looks or charisma," De Niro and Pacino do NOT spring to mind immediately!

De Niro and Pacino were considered hugely charismatic and were both good looking guys when they were at their peak. You don't become a successful leading man for years and years if you haven't got screen charisma.

It's certainly possible, I certainly agree he was talented enough!

No, for the reasons already explained, but also I don’t see him as much more than a very capable character actor destined for supporting roles.

Maybe I need to see more of his roles but in The Godfathers, Deer Hunter, Conversation and Dog Day he always plays the weakling second fiddle.

I don’t get the hype 🤷🏻‍♂️
