'Samson' effect

His movies in the 70's, during his shaggy-afro phase, were great (as were his performances)

But from the 80's onwards (once he'd ditched the 'fro') his movies were"t as good (even if his performances still were)

I wouldn't say he was a better actor in the past, but that "Afro" style hair has always annoyed me. Considering he hasn't had that kind of hair in a long time, I wonder if he intentionally styled it that way and, if so, why would he do something that stupid?

Afros for white people were extremely popular in the 1970s. Nobody considered it cultural appropriation back then.

That's Bob Ross's hair as it naturally grows, not styled into an Afro. Sutherland's hair is not naturally like that, as can be seen in his later films.

Yeah, right. did Bob Ross tell you that? https://www.today.com/popculture/can-you-handle-truth-bob-ross-famous-curly-hair-was-t102398

Even so, many white men and women chose to get poofy Afro-Adjacent hairstyles in the 1970s. My older sister's ex husband, a pure white French Canadian, had this. So did several of my male teachers. Look at the males of the Brady Bunch for a pop culture example.

I read somewhere that his afro hair was a wig. Why he wore it, I have no clue.

reply

No wig. It was just a popular '70s look. A perm.

Seemed like he fell out of favor. Most of his roles in big studio films were supporting.
