Has two Oscars but for the wrong films

Won for

1955:MISTER ROBERTS (Sal Mineo deserved to win for REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE)

1973:SAVE THE TIGER (Pacino or Nicholson should have won)

He should have won for

1959: SOME LIKE IT HOT
1960: THE APARTMENT
1979: THE CHINA SYNDROME
1982: MISSING

Best Actor for Some Like it Hot (1959), and a number of other nominations, would have done it.

reply

Am I the only one who loves Jack Lemmon in SAVE THE TIGER? LOL

I think Lemmon got the Oscars he deserved. Because he was so brilliant, we could have gone overboard with giving Lemmon several Oscars.

reply

No metalman091 I too loved Save the Tiger and his performance in it. Deserved to win

reply

Save the Tiger the only one of those I haven't seen. I sometimes wish they had put Cagney up for Mr. Roberts.

The 1962 Best Actor line-up may be the greatest in Academy history -

Burt Lancaster, Birdman of Alcatraz
Jack Lemmon, Days of Wine and Roses
Marcello Mastroianni, Divorce Italian Style
Peter O'Toole, Lawrence of Arabia
Gregory Peck, To Kill a Mockingbird

All great, iconic performances - I'm not personally a big fan of Divorce Italian Style but Mastroianni transcends the material with a fine comic performance, and the other films are all very good or better. Yet even against such heavyweight competition, I think Lemmon should have won for the most devastating, harrowing portrayal of alcoholism I have ever seen on screen. Brilliant performance.

His other Oscar IMO should have been for Some Like It Hot.

reply

LEMMON OVER MINEO IN 1955 EASILY.

reply

Lemmon was superb in SAVE THE TIGER, still one of my favorite "little films" of the past half a century. Not that he didn't deserve more Oscars than he got, and for some of those films you mention!

reply

He definitely should have won for The China Syndrome and Glengarry Glen Ross.

reply

For me it's Save the Tiger and The Apartment.

Missing was also a really good, eerie movie with a hell of a performance by Jack
