The 1962 Best Actor line-up may be the greatest in Academy history -
Burt Lancaster, Birdman of Alcatraz
Jack Lemmon, Days of Wine and Roses
Marcello Mastroianni, Divorce Italian Style
Peter O'Toole, Lawrence of Arabia
Gregory Peck, To Kill a Mockingbird
All great, iconic performances - I'm not personally a big fan of Divorce Italian Style but Mastroianni transcends the material with a fine comic performance, and the other films are all very good or better. Yet even against such heavyweight competition, I think Lemmon should have won for the most devastating, harrowing portrayal of alcoholism I have ever seen on screen. Brilliant performance.
His other Oscar IMO should have been for Some Like It Hot.
