We think of him now as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, but did critics like his work or recognize his genius in the 1980s/1990s when most of his films were released?

People think he was one of the greatest filmmakers of all time? What are you smoking, or are you from the estate of John Hughes? People never thought that then or even now. He was and still is just considered a director who defined the 1980s for a younger generation with his movies.

There was a lot of talk about the "brat pack" he assembled to star in his movies, but I don't recall much talk about his "genius" at all.
