She turned down both Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black

"Revealed in an interview with movie magazine "Empire" in 1998 that she is not very good at judging the scripts that are offered to her. She turned down both Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black: hombres de negro (1997), thinking "What is this *beep* while reading the screenplays."

Oh no!!!!

reply

She probably didn't know who was cast in them yet!

reply

To be honest I don't think being apart of those films would've made her a bigger star than she is already. Besides Will Smith and Harry Connick Jr. none of the cast members of ID4 have gone that far with their careers and are still stuck in TV land. Men in Black same thing minus Tommy Lee Jones, who was already an Oscar winner, and Will Smith, who was a rising star at the time. It wouldn't have mattered either way.

I have an unusual set of skills...

reply

You could be correct...after all, LOTS of actors were in hit/popular-type films and their careers went...well, no-place special. Pam Grier in "Jackie Brown," to name one. Jeez, look at Oscar winners Mira Sorvino and Marisa Tomei -- yes, they still have careers but what was the last 'hit" movie either was in? Heck, what's the last DECENT movie either was in?

reply

Marisa Tomei has been in Cyrus, The Lincoln Lawyer, Crazy Stupid Love, and The Wrestler. Sorvino you'd be right about.

I've got an ignore list longer than a Chinese phone book.

My guess is that after the Species movies she didn't want to be typecast doing Sci-Fi even if the stories were excellent.

Nice point of view!

Natasha Henstridge admitted to her regret turning down major roles in, "Independance Day" and "Men In Black". She never explained in detail just exactly why. She did hint that she didn't understand or believe in these upcoming movies. When she realized her mistake, she starred in John Carpenter's, "Ghosts of Mars", which should have been a hit, but flopped at the box office. We don't know why Natasha H. made the decisions she did until she fully explains herself. She was on top of the world in 1996, still riding the wave of popularity and visibility from her hit, "Species". She could afford to be choosier with her roles, but that freedom comes with its own risks. Imagine if those movies were produced in 1993 instead of later. An aspiring, unknown starlet as Natasha H. would have jumped at the acting gig along with its big paycheck and the resulting success would have propelled her as far as Species. Natasha H. is not the first actor to have regretted turning down roles that became hit movies. But she won't be the last to make that mistake.

Great info, thanks a lot.

Of course!

What I dont understand is:

"Imagine if those movies were produced in 1993 instead of later."

Why? I don see too much difference between a movie produced in 1993 or 1996-97
