Why Chevy Chase Will Never Work Again

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WuHJMDPzYs

Chevy Chase used to have a thriving career. He was an original Saturday Night Live cast member, he headlined classic comedy films like the National Lampoon's Vacation series, Fletch, Caddyshack and the Three Amigos. He was one of the biggest film stars of the '80s.

Some of his more recent credits were when he co-starred in NBC's Community and made an appearance in Hot Tub Time Machine and the National Lampoon's Vacation reboot film in 2015.

But despite the fact that he's starred in a few films and TV shows in recent years, he doesn't appear to be dominating the film industry with his signature brand of dry humor anymore. It seems like his career has come to a grinding halt. While he was once an A-lister, he now finds himself demoted to the B and C list - so what happened? What prompted his fall from grace?

Well, we've investigated Chevy Chase's fade out of the limelight and we think we've discovered exactly why he's been pushed to the sidelines - and to be honest, Chase has nobody to blame but himself.

The Trouble Maker: It greatly amuses me to see this second coming of love for this former A+ list mostly television actor (Chevy Chase). A new generation follows the aging actor on social media and love him. They think he is kind and loving and warm and exactly the kind of person they would want for their grandfather. There was the time he was the lead in an ensemble show ("Community") and was so hated and reviled by the cast and crew that he was forced out of the show after just a few seasons. The public loved him and was upset that he was gone. The cast and crew partied like they all just won the lottery. There was the time he violently slapped the face of this A- list actress (Cheri Oteri) after she stopped sleeping with him and spit in the face of another actress. The same thing that happened at the show I mentioned above, happened at another hit show ("Saturday Night Live") and another wild celebration was had when he was forced out. Oh, when he was doing a play that he hated, he would call in sick when Tony voters were coming in so the show wouldn't win any awards. There are dozens of other examples of him being horrific, but everyone just loves him now because he is all cuddly. Don't believe the façade. Chevy Chase/"Community"/Cheri Oteri/"Saturday Night Live" (Chevy Chase: How the ‘National Lampoon’s’ Star’s Violent Behavior Got Him Banned From ‘SNL’) (Chevy Chase can’t change) (Chevy Chase Isn’t The Funny Guy You Think He Is) (‘Community’ creator calls former star Chevy Chase a ‘befuddled old man’)

I take these blind items with a grain of salt(especially the Pauly Shore Blind Item lol). Chevy has made a lot of jokes at other people's expense but a lot of times as mean as those jokes were they were hilarious as well. However, Chevy slapping Cheri Oteri probably never happened. The best way I've ever seen Chevy described was someone saying "If a celebrity doesn't get their ego under control within a year of them becoming famous, they are usually headed for BIG trouble!"

Chevy was forbidden from hosting SNL ever again following the February 15, 1997 episode. He had hosted about eight times. The alleged slapping incident with Cheri Oteri happened during dress rehearsal. And Will Ferrell apparently went directly to Lorne Michaels to complain about what happened.

Wow that's crazy if it really happened. However, Chevy was on SNL in subsequent episodes just not guest host..some of those sites imply Chevy is completely banned from the show. You would think it would be mentioned in the Live From New York book but it's not.

he's on instagram and looking like he has retired or should. probably the last you'll see a lot of these old snl/sctv/lampoon guys.

ghostbusters afterlife is probably the last of aykroyd, murray will be in a few more wes anderson films, steve martin and martin short probably won't be in much after only murders in the building and maybe schitts creek for levy and o'hara (joe flahtery?)

Because his "talent" is not timeless? People will forget about him the way they forgot about Laurel and Hardy. Give it another 10-20 years and you will very seldom hear his name come up.

reply

Umm wrong. laurel and hardy were not forgotten. It's just that the younger set haven't been introduced to them. The Three stooges are still remembered well. Anyone under the age of 35 have pretty much been raised on the internet and streaming sites. They are more interested in YouTube and TikTok. As for Chevy. I like him. Christmas Vacation will be played on Christmas well after we kick the bucket. He will mostly be remembered through that. But yeah he probably won't be remembered on the scale of The Three Stooges.

Eventually though all of our filmed entertainment will be largely forgotten through time. No ones gonna be watching Star Wars so vigorously a thousand years from now. 😂

reply

Don't get me wrong. I like L & H but their comedy is "slow" for many young people. You are right in that Christmas Vacation and the first Vacation movie will air for quite a long time there after. But CC will not be the primary reason for those movies to be broadcast. He will be "that guy" who turns up in them to future viewers. Viewers will give a bigger hoot over Cousin Eddie because the character is more extreme. The classic comedic "straight man" does not register very well with younger viewers which Chase was in the Vacation movies.

Chevy Chase did a great Gerald Ford impersonation on Classic SNL and I stress "Classic" because modern day SNL is nothing more than Liberal garbage that caters to just that: Liberals

He's still working
