What is his 'legacy' movie?

40 years from now, after he is dead and gone.

Looks like 'Christmas Vacation' (1989) to me.

As a Gen Xer it is a bit strange...the original Vacation (1983) did better at the box office. Caddyshack (1980)would have been the hands down choice, but the new generations don't seem to like it.

Fletch for sure. My gut reaction the minute I read your post heading. By no means his best movie, but trust me, that one.... it's gonna be fascinating to later generations.

There's also a lot of messages about current year culture in Spys Like Us which I think can be unpacked for generations to come. It has uniquely archival content. The more the world changes, the more strange it becomes, the films that dial in on the culture of the times, those are gonna be the most interesting.

I grew up loving Fletch, but I didn't think it has held up very well.

"I'll have a Bloody Mary, a steak sandwich, and a steak sandwich."

I don't know why, but I love that line.

THE CHRISTMAS ANGLE HELPS...THAT IS 100% GONNA BE THE MOVIE OFF HIS RESUME THAT LINGERS ON.

reply

Even after Christmas is destroyed and swept aside by the Satanic Commies that remold society in their image?

reply

LMAO...UH...SURE?

reply

Don't worry. Us being removed is part of the equation.

reply

The dems want to stop christmas being a federal holiday

reply

Because Democrat is Pig Latin for Grinch.

reply

That would have to come down to Fletch or Vacation I would think.

I like both, but I'd have to go with Fletch.

Three Amigos

Few would call this his legacy film, and I don’t, but there’s something about Funny Farm that makes it my favorite film of his. Not that it’s great, I only rated it a 6 on IMDB (would have gone 6.5 if they allowed halves), but it’s my favorite. Vacation is a better film though. Several are.

reply

Funny Farm is great. I also love Seems Like Old Times.

reply

I have to go with Vacation as he carried that movie..He's great in Caddyshack but he had to share with at least 4 or 5 other great comedians

The original vacation movie

reply

The original Vacation film by a mile.

I agree with this, for a few reasons - its nit an ensemble piece, it spawned a series including Christmas Vacation which probably has been seen by more people including myself but the original is the funnier flick. Fletch is hilarious and has a sequel but the first vacation was more influential and earlier in his career.
