Should have been immediately....

...escorted out of the auditorium and arrested for assault. Instead, he’s allowed to assault someone....casually return to his seat....and then they give him an AWARD??? WTF?

What a complete tool.

how does this surprise you?!? hollywood allows all the big shots to get away with rape and all other fucked up shit. assault is no big deal if ur an a lister who does what he is told u are above the law

Mister, I hear what you're saying but this is an Oscars show, they tell jokes all night long. Jada has alopecia, its not a life threatening condition. There is also the chance that Rock didn't know she had it.

Telling a stupid joke like this is not illegal, punching someone is. Smith should face charges for this.

+1

But making fun of someone's illness (alopecia) is distasteful, so there is that.

There is also the chance that Rock didn't know she had it.

Smith's reaction says otherwise, but it is still possible.

reply

She is going bald. Big whoop! She isn't dying. It was a joke. I can't stand Jada but she looks good bald. Nothing for her or him to get pissy about. They put on airs like they think they're something great.

Mister, the DA could decide to charge Smith anyways because it's still a crime to assault someone.

And again, I get what you mean, it was probably in poor taste, I mean, if Rock knows Jada has alopecia. But like I said, it's the Oscars. The celebs that sit on the front row always get razzed at this show, it's a tradition. Rock would never say this off stage. Smith was out of line to do that. Way out of line...

And GI Jane is not an insult. GI Jane was a tough woman and a good person to boot.

If Chris Rock pressed charges he'd pretty much lose his comedian card for life. Everybody knows that a comedian is one of the biggest intentional assholes in the world because their job is to make a joke out of just about everything.

and this isn't exactly Chris Rocks first joke that went over the line. Will Smith is just a special kind of sensitive if this incident was even real.

reply

someone makes fun of your wife's appearance for something she can't help thats not funny

You mean like male pattern baldness (a medical condition that afflicts millions of men) that get jokes and roasted about all the time. No difference. It only got the reaction it did and people defending Will Smith because she is woman but i'm no biologist so can't confirm that.

He was roasting her shaved head. Alopecia is hair loss, it doesn't magically shave your head.

Finally big whoop. It was a joke. Why does she think she has a right not to be offended by a joke. If you can't laugh at that you have real serious problems.

reply

GI Jane is a bad ass, it wasn't even an insult. Not only that it's tradition at award shows for the host to roast any actors in the front row. Now comics will refuse to present at these events and the ones that do go will have to completely censor themselves because Jada couldn't handle a GI Jane joke. Will only got mad after seeing Jada looking pissed too, he was laughing like everybody else.

reply

Kind of schoolyard mentality.

You can take the boy out of Brooklyn …

reply

JMWick, that is an excellent point. Chris Rock's remark could almost be taken as a compliment.
GI Jane was indeed a badass, and Demi Moore looked good, and cool, with the marine cut.
Chris saying that kinda took some of the awkwardness off of Jada's shaved head and normalized it.

Jada has made light of her condition in interviews....and if Chris's comment had been said to Jada in a small group over drinks, it probably would have been taken in the way it was meant. In other words, not mean-spirited.

In any case, CHris Rock came out looking pretty good in all of this. He took the hit like a man, stayed on his feet, and powered through. It was just a missed opportunity for a great line from him after the slap. Something better than: "Greatest night in TV history."

reply

Didn’t he let her sleep with other men and condone it with some bullshit about monogamy not being her vision of marriage? But he blows a gasket and destroys what should have been the greatest night of his professional life over a haircut joke?

reply

Will laughed. Only after he looked at his wife and saw she was upset did he become angry.

Cops eventually showed up, but Rock didn't press charges.

reply

I agree. I think they were trying to deescalate the situation. Forcing him to leave would’ve caused more problems for the show.

reply

What disgusted and disappointed me (not that it was surprising) most was how instantly Hollywood forgave his shameful behaviour. Note the standing ovation when he collected his award.

I don’t think they could have refused his award, nor should they, I guess - but I hope the Academy revokes his membership, or at least bans him from attending future ceremonies.

reply

just wait to Hollyweird rapes a kid live on stage and give them a trophy

reply

I really try to avoid all stories of Smith, wife, kids, projects et al. Get the feeling he's kind of emotional wreck about things and thinks the world needs to focus on himself and his feelings.

reply

Yeah, that's what I thought too,
but then there is this thing going on that some people want to see
and you don't know what could happen with the crowd if you tried
to arrest Smith. He could have a gun.

Smith is insane. He needs jail time for that, assuming it was real.

reply

I agree.

VERY interesting to consider how this would have gone had it been a white man to do the same thing. In this case, it's brushed off and considered reasonable. If it had been a white actor who 'stood up' for his wife in this manner, the US would be on fire right now.
