He only has 1 Oscar for the Departed. He wasn’t nominated for Best Director for Taxi Driver, Silence, and more. He didn’t win Best Director for Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street, and now The Irishman. Bong-Joon just won 4 Oscars in one night and Scorsese has 1 in 50 years.

They often vote for movies that they think have good messages, or portray their industry in a good light...

Scorsese's movies are too nihilistic, morally ambiguous and complex to be the message movies that the Academy likes to champion...

Maybe the movies that he was up against were just better.
