There was a period of time when she was a teen (mid-late 90s) where she said some pretty controversial things. She confessed to having gone through periods of self-mutilation and bulimia and even once rolled up her sleeve to a journalist who was interviewing her, revealing self-inflicted cigarette burns. She said she wanted to see if she could "handle the pain". Recently she commented on her persona at that time, saying she was being "sarcastic" and that a lot of the things she did were taken out of context. But these statements were still viewed as concerning for a teenager.
Not to mention she was famous for playing solemn and morbid characters in dark films like The Addams Family and The Ice Storm. I think this probably helped to contribute her dark, "Goth"-like reputation. She was kind of the "anti-Alicia Silverstone" of the 90s. She's mellowed out a lot now, and has turned into a beautiful, intelligent woman (she always was beautiful imo though!). Just goes to show that nobody should form judgement on a person based on how they acted as a teenager, lol - they are whacky and awkward times for all of us. I don't think I'd want to be held accountable for the things I said or did as a teenager!
