Was Pacino assumed to be gay in the early part of his career?

Just noticed that no less than 3 of his early films have gay overtones.

Scarecrow - Pacino is raped by a gay prison trustee.
Dog Day Afternoon - Pacino plays a gay bank robber trying to finance his lover's sex change.
Cruising - Say no more. Probably the most overtly gay film in American history, pre-2010s.

People back then must have had theories about him, right?

As a goy he had to participate in the humiliation ceremony to get accepted into Hollywood.
