The Godfathers
Serpico
Dog Day Afternoon
Carlito's Way
Donnie Brasco
Just watched Scarecrow on TCM the other day... I like Al and Gene Hackman so it was fun to watch but it felt almost as if he did a TV movie in the middle of all these other epic performances.
Love Carlito's Way. I just saw it for the first time about a year ago on TV. Excellent. Devil's Advocate is another favorite. Al Pacino underplayed the role of John Milton so well, very subtle.
Scarface would have been a favorite of mine, but TOO much swearing and violence, too over the top. Al Pacino is too talented to have to indulge in such scenery chewing antics.
That's interesting. I thought John Milton was one of his best roles! Why didn't you like it? I'm curious.
Pacino was great in Scarface, but that's the type of movie I can only watch once and I usually cringe when I do. So MUCH violence and swearing. I agree that it was supposed to be about excess. It's just "too much" excess for me. lol I like the old gangster movies from the forties and I prefer the subtler approach. I just don't need to hear profanity in ever other sentence or see rivers of blood. Just my personal taste I guess.
I usually love Pacino's monologue but his monologue near the end of ADA was over the top for me. I love him so much that when that scene comes up, I can't help but close my eyes as I really don't like it. I really cringe watching it.
The first time I saw Scarface I too was shocked tbh. I found it very loud, way too loud than I was used to. But I got used to it in subsequent viewings. Now the loudness even fits with the color palette of the film, with all the other characters, music, and direction of De Palma.
I also like a lot of gangster films in the 30s and 40s, I watched a lot of Cagney films because he is so charismatic. I'm from the Philippines, people don't usually swear here often, so I get shocked when I read profanities from posters even, especially the gangsta type.
Oh hi Vicky! Didn't realize it was you that I was talking to until you mentioned that you were from the Philippines.
Have you finished any of those Star Trek books? I was wondering if you enjoyed them.
I give honorable mention to Frankie and Johnny. Didnt really like the movie and his character was a bit annoying, but I'm always impressed when two people can play a couple in two different movies (him and Michelle Pfieffer, Scarface) and you don't even realize it until after the movie is over. I don't know why, but to me it just really brings home the depth of their craft.
I thought Frankie and Johnny was a nice movie... don't remember it much because I saw it when it came out... but it's always nice to see Al playing a more normal, low key character.
Just thought of another one I think he is terrific in.
And Justice For All!
Love everything about that movie except for one thing...... The music. It stinks!
I'll have to check out that one... I remember the ads of him shouting "You're all out of order" the way Jack Nicholson would yell "You can't handle the truth" but I don't think I ever saw it.
