just watched elle

it's a very good movie, but it was a great move from Nicole Kidman to turn down the role, not because she cannot carry it but even the director admitted that shooting in the u.s.a would be difficult due to it's intense, violent and immoral content, the movie would go in the thriller\cliches direction, and that's exactly as a huge fan to Nicole, the place i don't want to see her in it, what do you think guys?

Huppert was brilliant. It turned out great. Nicole has Lion, it's not like she's starved for roles, especially considering her 2017.

reply

yeah 100%

I think it's a trashy overrated flick, althought Huppert does elevate it, I don't think she will be nominated. If Nicole had starred in it the film would have been torn to shreds.

it's not trashy at all, but maybe you don't like that kind of movie or you were expecting something else.

reply

I'm glad she passed, didn't believe for a second Huppert was an executive in a *beep* video game company and the rape came across as exploitative especially the flashes. the dialogue I'm sure would have sounded horrible and corny if it was in English, everything sounds better in french.

It's a masterpiece for me. There's nothing trashy about it. It's fascinating how Verhoven and Huppert mixed dark, satirical, ironic, violent context with psychological richness of the character.
It's also a masterpiece in acting. Huppert is the best actress for me. Outstanding and very smart performance.
It's funny how Nicole is saying in intrviews how she's willing to be brave with her choices constantly refusing Lars von Trier offers, Verhoeven's and Kar-Wai's and doing Grace of Monaco and Queen of the Dessert instead.
Even better for Isabelle Huppert. She's having a great year already with two best movies of the season.

Elle is definitely one of the best films of the year. Not really agree on your Kidman criticism. Scheduling conflicts are standard stuff, regarding Von Trier and Kar-Wai. As for Elle, maybe she refused it because she's the ambassador for violence against women and Elle's script, fascinatingly, puts the character above the pain of that.

reply

Scheduling conflicts. Maybe. For me it's about decisions and attitude towards art. I think Juliette Binoche didn't really overthink to choose Bleu with Kieslowski or Jurassic Park with Spielberg. Same with Kidman. Choose small part in great movie like Nymphomaniac with von Trier and stay true to Your artistic choices or do a vanity project with one-hit director like Dahan.
That's why actresses like Binoche, Huppert, Swinton are so incredible and still so relevant.
Also, she can work really hard with very differen projects, in different parts of the world. Look at this year. But than she goes: "I have two kids... and I can't do theater on Broadway" She did the same year earlier in London but ok. These are excuses. Most people have kids.
Sorry, I like daring and brave Nicole. I hoped once she will stay that way but she's only occasionally brave and daring with very mixed results. Yes, I become slightly dissaponted with her in recent years, but of course I still love her. She thinks she's very bold and artistically free in her choices but to me it looks like she's completely undecided. Audience seems to be also confused looking on how much money her movies are making. Doing both small, independent movies and commercial movies is not that easy.
