I know people will hate me for saying this....

But she's only an icon because she died and IMO praising this woman or admiring her is a *beep* in the face of the great true Hollywood actresses like Elizabeth Taylor or Ginger Rogers. Both had true talent but this woman gets to be praised.

___Had Elizabeth Taylor, or Ginger Rogers died at 36, neither would still be media stars the way Marilyn is, and believe me I'm a fan of both of those ladies. There was a lot more to Marilyn than just a premature death. Your viewpoint is off the mark and obviously not shared by the majority.

Yeah you're right, they just had talent and great movies. Marylin had.... A body?

She had CHARISMA, you OP asshole. Liz Taylor was gorgeous. She was also a home wrecker. Ginger Rogers was famous because of Fred Astaire, not that she was not talented. Marilyn, MM, was the FIRST woman one-name STAR. Elvis was the first one-name male STAR. Nobody EVER referred to Liz or Ginger. Marilyn didn’t have A BODY, you ditz. Jane Mansfield had A BODY. Marilyn had BREATHLESS. Go and try to put that in a bottle.

Fuck. At least Madonna understood. She was Breathless Mahoney in the Dick Tracy movie.

Nobody is going to "hate" you. You have an opinion. More than 50 years after her death, Monroe is still a current figure in popular culture. Slice it however you want, but not even James Dean or Elvis held on to the imagination as MM has. Or even Harlow, who was all but forgotten until a sleazy 1964 book--and two terrible movies-- briefly resurrected her, and trashed her life and image.

As much as I admire the great, gorgeous Ginger Rogers, she is hardly in the hard-core legendary class of Taylor or Monroe. Lots of talent, very little drama. Had she died at 36, we would surely remember her. But she wouldn't be iconic.

Taylor? She'd already lived a thousand lives by 36--she'd be remembered, and iconic. Not AS as iconic as she is today because so much drama was still to come, including her incredible work for AIDS.

Monroe had the rare X quality that so many still relate to-- young people fall in love with her photos or a snippet of film, without knowing the details--the good and the bad.

In any case, it's always okay not to "get" her. That's what makes the world go around. How boring it would be if we all agreed with each other!

But what? What does she have? I've been watching old movies since a chd and Marylin has never grabbed my attention. Elizabeth Taylor did. Marylin was am horrible actress I don't see what's to be admired about that. I think her face is just plastered everywhere so people think she was important. I just wish someone would splash someone else's face everywhere.

Elizabeth Taylor couldn't sing, nor was she enigmatic. So, those are two things Marilyn had over her. Marilyn had a beautiful singing voice, and a natural talent for performing, singing, dancing, and even comedy. She was a wonderful actress who took her craft seriously. She also possessed great intellect. I'm not sure why you think Marilyn fans value your opinion. You say MM is a poor actress and rated Good Burger a "9" and Some Like It Hot a "5".

You really think Elizabeth Taylor a woman who was praised for her exquisite beauty since she was a child and literally grew up in front of the world would simply be forgotten had she died tragically at 36?

You must be joking or balmy
