What is your opinion on tipping culture?

I think it's gotten out of hand and somewhat toxic at least in USA/Canada.

I think it's ridiculous with the current cost of living and inflation crisis that even places where you don't normally tip are now asking you for tips. Even their default options are 18% minimum. Hell, some places they add on a "mandatory gratuity" charge on top of the bill which is horrible.

Although I do tip, I don't necessarily agree with the culture in North America. I think it's up to the business to pay their servers fairly and let tipping be truly optional. That was what I noticed a big difference when I went to Iceland last summer was tipping isn't really a thing there or many other places in Europe.

Not really a thing in Australia, and I appreciate that. It sucks that people can't be paid a living wage to the point they need customers to pay more than the price of the items they've purchased to supplement that.

The thing is "tip" in its purest form means "To Insure Promptness".
It should NOT be mandatory, especially if you don't think that the service warranted a tip.
Tips have always been expected but should not be mandatory.
Another point for tipping is that many restaurants require their servers to pool tips and split it evenly between the staff. I feel that this is unfair to the really good servers as the poor ones who don't work as hard for them get more than they deserve.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned this but immediately this thread brought up the opening of "Reservoir Dogs" (1992) film and the parts in it where Mr Pink played by Steve Buscemi talks about how he generally doesn't tip. Even if its something as small as one dollar extra.

Well, I tip very highly.

I should say once I could afford to.

As to the why, being completely honest, a selfish motivation.....

The tipee doesn't forget. SO when you walk into that restaurant, or your hair salon, or you order a pizza for delivery...

You are very well taken care of, LOL.
