I did manage to finish Midsommar last night. In fact, I just couldn’t help but to. I was much more hypnotized by it this time around and appreciated more.

One issue remains though and here is someone who addressed it nicely:

The problem with this great film

Overall this film is another slam dunk from Aster, and the fact that some audiences believe Dani has ‘won’ at the end speaks to Aster’s power to indoctrinate people through his filmmaking the same way the cult indoctrinates Dani.

The film has a hypnotic quality - it’s bright, gentle, languid and beautiful - even when it’s showing you a paralysed man sewn into a bear suit being burned alive. Genius stuff.

But there’s a nagging issue for me, and that is that I didn’t believe the victims would be so easily led to the slaughter. As soon as they saw the oldies fall to their deaths, and the cult mash the old guy’s face in with a mallet, any sane person would start planning their escape, and they’d know to keep quiet and not provoke the cult.

Also, I would approach my supposed friend Pelle and be like ‘WhyTF didn’t you tell me we’d be witnessing suicide and murder?’ That scene needed to be there, as well as the team discussing their escape, because without it a reasonable person loses connection to the protagonist(s).

Okay, someone else gave a pretty solid explanation for this issue. It also meets with what Vince said last night. More I think of it, more this movie is fucking great.

The explanation:

Jsoh is unfazed. This is his life's work. He's open to shit like this. I know that sounds absurd, but that's the reality of it. They were old, they were of age. He's aware of this alleged practice already. To see it be real certainly impacts him, but he has an anthropological neutrality that a normal lay person could not possibly imagine.

Christian is arguably a blank slate / sociopath already, depending on how you to interpret his character.

Mark is a moron.

Simon and Connie reacted as you would expect. And everyone bought the explanations (from selfishness, self-absorption, you name it) except for Dani. Dani correctly realized something was wrong. But she was alone, and confused, and drugged, and dealing with other shit, and then finally when it's too late, she's in this strange liminal space between cult influence and fear/desperation, that she has no choice but to send Christian to his death.

reply

I've really enjoyed our conversations after these movies this weekend.

reply

Was this concern brought up last night or not really?

reply

Yes it was. The anthropology explanation was discussed as well.

This. 100% this.

They are really like that. I tried expanding on it some more on last night's Zoom, but I got distracted by talks about...navy seals....or something, lol. But yes, anthropologists often turn a blind eye in the name of cultural relativism, even to behaviors that aren't relative at all, lol. I've gotten into some pretty heated arguments with them.

Also, regarding Christian being a sociopath; while he might not be a true sociopath, his competitive streak leads him to exhibit antisocial behaviors. This is similar to what I've talked about regarding Hollywood, where you have to be willing to stab your friends in the back to survive. These individuals might not be outright sociopaths, but their own competitive nature combined with the context of their environments, like academia in Christian's case, tends to bring out antisocial behaviors in them. I do think in Christians's case, it was more him leaning more toward being anti-social, though.

But yeah, I agree it is a good film with a bizarre, hypnotic quality to it.

reply

Thanks for the input Vince!

I’m curious, how do you rate it?

reply

7/10, which seems lower than it should, but the plot meandered at points, which sort of gave it that hypnotic quality, but I feel the film could have been tightened up for a shorter runtime. I liked it though it was good.

reply

Yeah I feel you, first time around I have it 7.5/10. Yesterday was very different for me though.
