Simple Minds.

Briefly speaking, what do we think of this late 70s but mostly 80s Scottish synth-pop, pop/rock, arena rock etc but mostly pop band? Most known of course for such songs as "Don't You (Forget About Me)" (and yes, it WAS indeed in "The Breakfast Club" (1985) - very good movie) as well as albums like "New Gold Dream 81, 82, 83, 84" (1982), fronted by Kim Kerr?

Me, not a huge fan overall, and in the 90s and 00s they had done some mediocre and failed album releases, but I guess they are OK overall with some amazing songs and even albums too.

And yes on "Hunter and the Hunted" there is even that synth solo played by the jazz legend Herbie Hancock among other things - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvDsTPbMUQ0

Fans and admirers of various 80s pop bands like New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Cabaret Voltaire, OMD, The Associates, Yello, Icehouse, U2, Soft Cell, Modern Talking (yes haha I know I know I know, but even THEY have their appreciators too) and others - give them a listen.

And there is this also 1991 track - "Real Life" - I wonder, was it inspired by the Australian BAND Real Life ("Send Me An Angel" etc) in any way? Also name of that album from that year, have a listen - one of their more tolerable 90s songs though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bttu7o3iU_0

But their later period has been somewhat dodgy and uneven too but with some OK material here and there, they are certainly long behind their heyday though, their late 70s work like "Real to Reel Cacophony" (1979) are more experimental as well, as are some of their early 80s releases like "Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call" (1981) et all.

Some people really dislike them - OK to each their own, but I still see some value in their early works. How about you?

reply

I kind of dig their music, but to each their own.

reply

Briefly speaking, I like them.

reply

I have all their albums and have seen them in concert many times.

reply

No worries Andy so I guess you're a fan in a way. :)

reply

I AM A FAN.

reply

I like Simple Minds. New wave at its finest.

The lead singer by the way was briefly engaged to and I believe married to Patsy Kensit at some point, of Eighth Wonder fame and an actress too.

Jim Kerr...he was also married to (and eventually divorced from) Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders.

I like what I've heard from Simple Minds a lot and have never been aware of a group of people who actively dislike them.
