watching movies as a non-racist (hear me out)

watching movies as a non-racist (hear me out)

this is NOT a post about RACISM. It is about that turth of fact that some races simple don't enjoy movie from some other races and THAT IS OKAY. It's okay because it is simply entertainment and you can LIKE whatever you like.

If you HATE some race in or out of movies, THAT is racism and your issue you should seek help with.

That said... what movies have you enjoyed or not enjoyed where race was a part of the equasion?

I'll start.

I notice I GENERALLY relate to and enjoy movies with and about whites the most. I'm white. Also, there is a higher percentage of those, so I get it.

BUT, I often crawl outside that box to try different races films... some that I really enjoyed are:

[EDIT: I didn't TRY these films to learn to become non-racist, I didn't care what race was in them - I tried these films just for something different, to branch out and enjoy more from around the world]

AMILIE- French (ok not a race really), subtitled, had to read and work at the viewing and loved it

GET OUT - Black ok, I LOVE most of Jordan Peele's twilight zone style movies

DHOOM - Indian action flicks. It's inspired me to find many more Indian action films like Entherian Robot etc. Fun stuff!

THE WANDERING EARTH - Chinese. Really well made science fiction action. With a sequel.

PARASITE - Korean production with subtitles. A fun watch, even though the graphic ending seemed out of place TO ME

Race-- I DON'T CARE what race makes what if it is an entertaining movie.

Yet.... SOME turn me off BECAUSE OF RACE. Hear me out:
I can't get into a "made for black audiences" film where the dialog is SOOOO black sounding, it constantly reminds me, this was not made for me. I've tried watching those sometimes, and get about 10 minutes in and shut it off, NOT because they are black, but also BECAUSE they are black. Do you get what I mean? I don't hate, or offended or racist against, but the nature in which it is delivered was not relatable by me and it didn't hold my interest. There have been a few but I forget the names.

Also, happend on some chinese or japanese films... seemed it was all japanese locations, about japanese type of issues, just did not appeal to me, a white dude in the states.

To me, that is perfectly fine, expected, and does NOT make me racist on any level.

Also, some people don't like green beans, some do. This is life.

OOOH! Just remembered one: COCO from Pixar.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE most pixar movies, and this one looked beautiful, well made, BUT the entire mexican landscape of the plot didn't connect or resonate to me at all. And I love mexican art and style, just I didn't feel anything from this film like I have other pixars, got bored, mind wondered, tried finishing it off, but it just didn't interest me. it felt like a very IN YOUR FACE WE ARE ONLY ABOUT MEXICO vibe, and it didn't work for me.

Meanwhile, SOUL, with a black jazz guy, I enjoyed, but not rewatch.

reply

to juxtipose this, I LOVED that ZORRO movie, mostly set in mexican/spanish style, but it's plot and actions grabbed me. Seemed like COCO was more about Mexican LIFE, than plot and action. Where as Zorro had a plot simply based on those people and locations.

Movies are not always they seem on screen. A lot of those movies are written and directed by white writers and directors, who don’t understand the culture. So a lot of times black people cant get in to them either. It’s just something to consider. Maybe it is just bad. Even something like the Woman King which is as black as it gets was written by 2 white women.

reply

Fully agree there. I never dig into WHO wrote up or produced the movie. Only I notice I TEND to steer away from other races/cultures movies based on look and feel alone.... TO that could be misconstrued as me being RACIST, but I just don't see that. I simply don't FEEL like the movie interests me... maybe it is bad writing, I don't know... but I don't dislike ANY races for anything and have many different race friends.

Like those MADEA movies.... Full props and respect for what Tyler Perry has accomplished in his career! But I can't watch those films. I sit there not laughing, not feeling it, not getting into it.... yet those have done very well for the audience they find.... I assume wrongly probably a largly black audience?

It's like, you dislike Madea? You must be racist! No, I just don't feel connected or entertained by it. But I love Joran Peele films, and nearly all Denzel Washington stuff

reply

I know it's current hipness to hate all white productions, but they've been successful, and dominate movies.... but they are also almost 2/3 of the united states.

DEI is not really working out... giving 12% a 50 or 75% share... isn't realistic.

Oh well. I think my point is, one is not racist just because they don't get into other race's films.

I’d pay to see you and TheMan have an IN DEPHT conversation.

Yeah, one of my buddies had a massive stroke 2 years ago at another buddies house. He thought he passed out from smoking weed and set him back up on the couch and went to bed. Realized next day that something was wrong. He was in the hospital for a month only able to move his head and blink and wiggle a foot. His family decided to remove his feeding tube after a month on doctors advice. He died within a couple of days of having his tube removed. I'm still very disturbed by it and think about him all the time. I made a post about it because the way things happened was kind of messed up. So all things considered you are doing good being still with us. Chin up my man.

I miss watching movies as a racist/sexist

Best part is the pansy fucking left call us snowflakes (stealing as usual) for having an aversion to woke vomit worthy shite. Meanwhile they need disclaimers on dvd/blu ray releases telling them it 'It was reflective of a different time'.

They're so fucking stupid they don't get it. Just pure automatons. Sad really.

reply

ah yes. I too remember the good old days when people watched what they wanted to, or got offended and moved on rather than crying about it. I dont think being racist is helpful, but sexism will always exist because, you know, sex is natural and all that.

I'm not a fan of horror films, so, guess what? I DON'T WATCH THEM. It's super easy and I don't annoy anyone about how horrible I think it is FOR OTHERS to watch decapitations, blood lettings, various odd murders for fun and entertainment...I'd NEVER require movies I don't like to CATER to MY poor little sensativities.... that's MY problem, not theirs.

I agree they are fucking stupid. Not sure why we are letting them cause these issues?

reply

I seem to vaguely recall you were upset about the direction of the new Doctor Who

reply

Fuck off skavau. White women are hotter than blacks.

reply

I'll go where I want and do what I want.

Not sure what your preference there has to do with anything.

reply

Okay, you guys have a wonderful Sunday night. 👍

Signed, million man.

reply

Why are you so angry?

For the record. I'm older than you. You kiddies think calling older more experienced adults kids is 'insulting'?

No, When I get called a kid I think, Whew, I'm not an olde fart after all. All calling another poster 'kid' demonstrates is that you are dsealing with an actual child.

reply

Buds, you want to be careful. You are aware he used to "WORK AS A CRIMIAL", right?

reply

FOR THE RECORD...YEAH...THAT IS TRUE...THIEF,DRUG DEALER,THUG...I HAVE BEEN VANILLA STRAIGHT FOR ALMOST 17 YEARS THOUGH.😉

reply

Thug. 😄

reply

I heard you out, to my own detriment.

I mean sure, watch whatever you like, but why be so defensive about it?

reply

From my seat, I'm not being "defensive" on any level, just talking about a thing I found kind of interesting.

Do you think I'm racist for being repelled from black cinema?

reply

No, and I honestly doubt anyone else has ever accused you of being racist for your film choices, which to me makes the whole post redundant.

reply

Here's the thing:

All sorts of films for all sorts of audiences are being made all the time. Entertainment is a big market with a lot of variety -- especially if we bring film industries outside of Hollywood into the equation. Of course, big Hollywood blockbusters being so damn expensive to make are pretty much aimed at [adopt Gary Oldman voice:] EVERYONE.

Sub-$100m, this is not always -- or even usually -- the case.

Some films will appeal to you. Some films won't. Some you will like. Some you will not.

Not sure why race factors into this at all really. And given that no-one is forcing you to watch films that don't appeal to you and that no-one is going to force you to watch films that don't appeal to you, it's not entirely clear to me what this topic is even really attempting to express. Where is the friction? What is the issue you are addressing?

But you do you. Watch what you want. Other people will do likewise. That's the free market for ya.

reply

I tried to spell it out clearly, but maybe did not.

people bark about racism this or that, but ignore the reality FACT that is is okay to NOT be connected to other race movies. GENERALLY, me not being drawn to fundamentally black films does not mean "I hate blacks" and am racist. That is far from the truth.

That's the point of my post. Simply stating it is okay to like/dislike whatever and that doesn't make you racist.

Simply put, races GENERALLY probably take more interest in THEIR race's films - again poeple may call that racism and they would be wrong. And stupid. It's just how life is and that's okay.

And I said it is okay many times in my OP. And that everyone is allowed to like whatever they LIKE.

Was curious if others would admit they are also like that.

reply

I've just never really encountered this line of thinking before. I've never heard of anyone being accused of racism for not wanting to watch films that aren't really designed to appeal to them -- whether they're Japanese films for the domestic Japanese market or films aimed specifically at Black Americans or whatever it might be.

Once, on Twitter, I did see someone suggest that Americans couldn't really consider themselves to be progressive or inclusive if they didn't also watch films from other nations. I thought it was one of the stupidest 'hot takes' I'd ever stumbled across. And I was embarrassed to see people agreeing with it. But that's about as close as I've come to this kind of thing.

I think people should watch a wide variety of films. But not because it's racist not to. That's silly. But because it's culturally enriching. But if people don't want to, people don't want to. No business of mine what other people do with their leisure time. And, yes, silly to throw accusations around... so, I guess, insomuch as this is a phenomenon, I suppose I'm agreeing with you. I just wonder how much of a burning issue it really is.

reply

What you're talking about, to me, sounds less about race and more about culture. There's a Denzel Washington interview where he talks about this. You don't have a problem getting into Get Out, a black-oriented film, but you do have a bit of a problem with movies, "...where the dialog is SOOOO black sounding, it constantly reminds [you], this was not made for [you]." That's not racism (or you wouldn't be able to stand Get Out - a distinctly black experience-oriented film with prominent black characters). So, I don't think you're racist or bigoted.

However, I would encourage you to push yourself with a few other films from disparate cultures. One of the best effects that art has on people is to open their minds to other people and other experiences. Travel is expensive, but building an understanding of other cultures through art is a cheap way to reap the benefits of empathy boosts, horizon expansion, and cultural savvy that comes out of travel.

With that said, I also think that you're mostly doing it. You've already got a pretty eclectic taste with films like Amelie, Dhoom, and Parasite on there; you're already enjoying other cultures.

reply

This guy gets it. Yup, exactly. I have zero hate for any races but it seems like even SAYING that, people think you are racist and trying to cover or something dumb.

The Denzel thing is spot on. And I fully agree. If they are sounding/acting sooo black, it's just not my interest. And I tend to push away. That said, I am happy those movies exist for whatever audiences they are for. No hatin or anything.

I would put the same thing in for PARASITE, and WANDERING EARTH. To me, Parasite looked like a basic Korean DRAMA about people and places I have no desire about. BUT, I read about how good it was and gave it a shot and loved it. With Wandering Earth, I saw some visuals and decided it would be fun even if it was not subtitled.

But I guess I am "David Duke" for bringing up this topic.... a topic WELL COVERED by Denzel Washington already. Maybe he is david duke too. :)
