Ever been on an Alaskan cruise?
Was it worth it?

BEING TRAPPED ON A BOAT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME WITH A BUNCH OF SPOILED ASS DRUNKEN PEOPLE?....HARD PASS.

shareYes! I enjoyed it. Someone recommended the Alaska cruise to me after their trip. It was the easiest and most practical way for me to see Alaska. It's more difficult by vehicle.
Also, my group was part of a theme, therefore there was theme-related activities on the ship for us. Dogsleading, helicopter ride, seaplane, famous brothel museum, small towns and glaciers off ship.
Attempt to get a cabin with a window so you can see the view.
I did get seasick for the first time in my life. It lasted only one night and I took a pill for it. Very unpleasant experience and odd for me since I love small rocky boats - the rockier, the better.
Did you go by yourself? If so, was it "weird"? I'm thinking going alone sometime in the Fall.
Another thought I had was take a flight up there and rent a car.

I had a second friend who made it sound like driving is too difficult during an Alaska trip because of its geography. My cruise went to several cities/towns and I walked around or did tours.
I decided not to ask any of my friends and just meet people on the cruise. Like I wrote, I had joined a large tour group (100+) so I knew I would make friends and I did a cabin share with two strangers from the group who I befriended. I went alone, but was technically with a themed group tour sharing meals (we had our own tables) and activities.
I would have asked a friend to come along if I hadn't done the group tour. I just figured I'd have more fun without them since they could be skittish about things like helicopter tours which I wanted to do.
I've also done that - very easy to to drive from Anchorage.to either Seward or to Fairbanks. I love Talkeetna - where the show Northern Exposure was filmed

I’ve been off shore fishing a lot and I got sea sick once from hard drinking the night before. I have to say it was one of the most miserable feelings of my life and it didn’t let up until my feet touched the dock. I’ll never get that messed up before going out again. :)
I don't drink. A pal warned me I'd get sick sea on a long cruise, but I laughed it off since I've been in small rocky boats and was fine while all my pals became seasick.
shareI've been on 5 cruises to Alaska - one of my favorite destinations. The scenery is spectacular and the ports are great - many things to do in each one. I was on one of the very last cruises to Alaska before Covid struck - late September, 2019, (the season ends in late Sept and doesn't start back up until the beginning of May.)
I've taken a post cruise train trip to what was then Mt McKinley with a flight over the mountain and a glacier landing. The train to Fairbanks is wonderful. Whale watching can be spectacular. It's one of the few locations I can go to over and over again.
Which cruise do you recommend? So many choices. Which is best for a solo traveler?
I have a fascination with Fairbanks. I like the isolation in the middle of nowhere which is great for a hardcore introvert like myself. I want to check out their auto museum which is apparently really good for a city of its size. Also, the Chennai Hot Springs.
Seriously, Alaska has got to be the most beautiful State.

I like Princess. They have enrichment lectures, special menu for Alaska - a nice relaxed vibe. I don't know about traveling solo, but Princess is not a party cruise line, so I think you would enjoy it.
We spent a few days post cruise in Fairbanks and one of the places we visited was the auto museum - lots of unique cars. Also do the paddle boat tour on the Chene River.
No, that sounds extremely cold!
I suppose the seafood is quite nice though.
It's apparently got rave reviews and seems quite popular. Alaska seems beautiful.
But yuck! I hate seafood.

Oh, yes, I’ve heard lots of good things. I just dislike the cold.
And don’t you besmirch seafood or we may never dine together LOL;)
It's not cold during the summer months, but it can be damp and chilly - some days can be spectacular and sunny. It is COLD out by the glaciers, but it's possible to see everything from inside the ships.
shareMy parents went on one in 2016. They had many good things to say about it. My mom has a fascination for Alaska and it had been on her bucket list. They got to see beautiful blue glaciers, whales, bald eagles, the Midnight Sun, an Alaskan Husky Ranch, and they had a lot of fun visiting the different towns on the coast. They even got to hear about the 30% Club and restaurant near Mt. McKinley. Alaskans apparently have a sense of humor, and this club only has members who have had the honor of seeing the peak of Mt. McKinley on a clear day, which is only 30% of the time year-round, because the other 70% of the year, its top is covered in clouds. My parents brought back a lot of great souvenirs :D
