Any techies here ...

Can you clarify this for me please? To update my drone as it no longer connects to my phone;

"Via USB
1. Go to Parrot Bebop 2’s support page at https://community.parrot.com/t5/Bebop-2/
bd-p/Bebop_2.
2. Under DOWNLOADS, click Software update to download the update file (.plf).
3. Move that file (bebop2_update.plf) to an empty USB flash drive (formatted to FAT32),
and place it in the USB's root directory. DO NOT RENAME THE FILE.
4. Connect the USB flash drive to the OTG adapter, then insert it into the Micro-USB port
on the Bebop 2, and then power on the drone. Bebop 2 begins updating."

So I just need an empty USB, download the update onto it, then plug it into the drone?
What's an OTG adapter?

It shouldn't be so confusing to update tech πŸ˜•.

Maximrecoil is your man. He’s very techie - there’s a couple of others on here too, but their names elude me.

You are pretty much spot on with the workflow of downloading the update file onto USB drive and plugging it into the drone. Since the drone does not have a full size USB port, you need something that will allow you to transfer data from the USB device to it.

An OTG (on the go) adapter is used to adapt a full sized USB device to a smaller port size, in this case a Micro-USB format.

So, can I connect the drone to my laptop with the USB also connected and transfer the update? Or I need a physical adapter?

There's an RC car/plane shop not far from me, I think I'll take it there. This all sounds a bit technical for me πŸ˜“.

Thank you for your help though.

The documentation specifies an external adapter.

I don't know if the drone would be able to detect the update file if connected to a computer. The instructions imply that it updates by recognizing the new firmware in the root directory of an external storage device. You can try copying the firmware file to the drone's internal storage if it's doable by connecting it to your computer.

"So I just need an empty USB"

Yes, an empty USB flash drive, sometimes called a "thumb drive," and make sure it's formatted FAT32.

"download the update onto it"

Yes, save the update file to the flash drive in the root directory, meaning, don't create a folder for it.

"then plug it into the drone?"

Yes, but the flash drive probably won't plug in as-is because most of them have a full size USB plug (type A):

And according to those instructions, your drone has a Micro-USB port, so the flash drive won't fit.

"What's an OTG adapter?"

That's what will make your flash drive fit. Make sure you get one that adapts USB type A to Micro-USB. They make them in various configurations (type A to type C for example, which won't work for you). This is an example of one that should work for you:

But I'm not making any recommendations for a specific make/model; just giving an example of what to look for.

Ah ok. At least I know what I'm looking for now.

Great, thank you 😊

I told you Maxim was your guy.

What's the FAT32 part? Is that something I change on the usb via the laptop?

reply

Your flash drive is probably already FAT32. You can check it, and change (reformat) it if necessary, on your laptop. Assuming it's a Windows laptop, insert the flash drive and go to "My Computer" or "Computer" or whatever Windows calls it these days. It's the place that shows all of your drives. Right-click your flash drive icon and select "properties." On my Windows 10 PC it looks like this:

If yours says "File System: FAT32" like mine does, you are all set. But if it says something else, like NTFS or exFAT, you'll need to reformat it. To do that in Windows, right-click your flash drive icon again and select "Format..." from the menu. It will bring up a Window like this:

Select FAT32 from the file system drop-down menu, leave every other option as-is, and click the "start" button.

There are some unusual cases where that method in Windows can't change the file system, in which case there are more powerful tools built into Windows, such as Disk Management and the Diskpart command-line tool, and there are also third-party tools. Let me know if you run into any problems like that.

I said you were the man for the job πŸ‘

As long as it doesn't involve cell phones. I've never owned one and hopefully never will, so I know next to nothing about them. I know how they basically work (they are fundamentally just a specialized radio transceiver, i.e., a glorified walkie-talkie), but as far as the operating systems on "smartphones" go, I'm not familiar with them at all.

No clue. That's all gobbledygook to me.
