shareI find the concept of The State in its current form having the power over a citizen's life or death to be abhorrent. That said, I'd be very lenient on a family member/close family friend witnessing the murder of a loved one and taking revenge. Unfortunately, a citizen's current power over such leniency would fall under the category of jury nullification, which would involve an abundance of bureaucracy, and under extreme scrutiny.
So, in a weird way, I'd be more in favor of a modern posse system, of course only applied at the most violent tier of modern laws.

And true, I prefer not to say what I would do if (for example) someone raped and murdered my younger sister. Means, family members who take revenge have my genuine understanding.
On the other hand, if we (as a society) allow these kind of lynching there'll be soon escalating blood feuds and 'High Noon' on the streets with people hanging from the nearest tree again.
Kinda your last statement, but enhanced with modernized evidence collection techniques. No proof, no instant revenge.
