Who are some of your favorite fictional detectives in a film or show?

I'm watching Columbo for the first time & I'm having an absolute blast. He's already one of my all time favorite characters.

Next up is to watch the "old" Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) films/show. Been on my list for ages.

Here are just some of my favorite sleuths)

1. Adrian Monk (Monk, tv show)

2. DCI John Luther (Luther, tv show)

3. Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars, tv show)

4. Detective Goren (L&R: Criminal Intent, tv show)

5. Theo Kojak (Kojak, tv show)

6. Shawn & Gus (Psych, tv show)

7. Benoit Blanc (Knives Out, films)

8. Jake Gittes (Chinatown, film)

9. DCI Jane Tennison (Prime Suspect, tv show)

10. Clarice Sterling (Silence of the lambs, film)

11. Mills & Somerset (Se7en, film)

12. Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry, films)

Absolutely! I have posted this same video here several times now because it's a favorite. Also, I like Richard Roundtree as Shaft much more than Samuel L. Jackson.

damn right

Same! Sam Jackson is great but his Shaft has got nothing on Richard Roundtree.

He was fantastic! He's one of the main reasons the role is so iconic for me. The theme as dope af as well.

If you like Isaac Hayes, you’ll love Truck Turner. 😀

I do, and I think I might have seen this, or parts of it. Some might not know it but Shaft was the brainchild of multi-talented director, Gordon Parks and it's the film that spawned the Blaxploitation genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DEZy5ZEQTU Btw, one of the better acceptance speeches, imo.

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) and Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), although earlier, weren’t as big as Shaft for sure.

I’ve never thought to look into Gordon Parks filmography, but I will now. 👍

I'm familiar with both of those movies.

I discovered him through this movie https://moviechat.org/tt0064579/The-Learning-Tree. I was a teenager working as an usher in a movie theater when I saw it and it really impacted me because I had several black friends in that community that I had grown up with since grade school.

reply

Very cool. I’ll look it up.

Unsurprisingly, this just showed up in my YouTube recommendations. As a drummer and old codger myself, I couldn't help but relate since I've always loved the high hat cymbal work in this particular cut of music and it's perfectly displayed in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yn_1pIPbFA

I’m a big fan of the Italian Poliziotteschi genre and when I read this topic the first character to come to mind was Commissario Betti played by Maurizio Merli. He played this detective in Violent Rome (1975), The Tough Ones (1976) and Violent Naples (1976) which were all strong entries in the genre. He was in many other films in this genre as other detectives but they were all the same no nonsense, tough guy detective roles he’s known for.

So many cool actors starred in these Eurocrime films, but Maurizio Merli was in a lot of these and almost always in the detective role.
