Let’s decide now, what is the Greatest Song Ever?

Pick one of the 5 choices:

1. The Doors: The end (my pick)
2. Queen: bohemian Rhapsody
3: The Beatles: Edit: A day in the life
4: Les Zeppelin: Stairway to heaven
5: Kansas: Dust in the wind

If you have a song that you think beats all five above, please share with us.

I wouldn't choose any of those as the greatest song ever. I don't think there is such a thing.

reply

Truthfully, there are only 2 songs that I never change the station when they're on the radio, and they are "Under Pressure" Queen/Bowie and "Back On The Chain Gang" The Pretenders. Bowie's "Heroes" is probably a close third.

reply

Under Pressure is a great pick, and I do like Back On The Chain Gang (although Brass In Pocket in my favourite The Pretenders song).

reply

The Pretenders are massively underrated. Chrissie Hynde is a great songwriter.

It's not necessarily my favourite song (it's not even my favourite Michael Jackson song) but going through the Top 40 songs if 1983, I have to say Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' is one of the most perfectly constructed pop songs of all time.

Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' is another perfect song IMHO, which sounds great, no matter who's covering it. Also, pretty much anything by Marvin Gaye, especially 'What's Going On' (for lyrics and structure) or 'Got to Give It Up' (just purely for sound and an amazing beat, which I can listen to forever), should be considered.

If we're talking about The Beatles, then rather than John Lennon's solo 'Imagine' (which I don't even think is his best solo song), I'd offer 'A Day in the Life'. From the opening line "I heard the news today, oh boy," that song has you hooked.

And surely The Rolling Stones ('You Can't Always Get What You Want' or 'Gimme Shelter') or Bowie ('Life On Mars') should be considered.

reply

It’s be down to swap Imagine for A day in the life

reply

In which case, I'll happily give my vote to that one, in view of the options, and it somehow feels right that it's a Beatles song.

IT IS ALREADY DECIDED...THE SONG IS BY TENACIOUS D...THEY USED IT TO BEAT THE DEVIL IN A ROCK OFF AND SAVE THE WORLD...BUT THEY FORGOT THE SONG...THERE IS A TRIBUTE TO IT THOUGH.🙂

STUPID FUCKING DEVIL...NEVER MESS WITH THE D!

Whatever Rolling Stone magazines says.

Not.

reply

TBF, when it comes to *music* Rolling Stone and NME are often quite astute. It's when they try to delve into other matters (i.e. film, general culture, politics, news stories...which they've been factually wrog about), that they falter.

reply

Rolling Stone magazine stopped being relevant about music (& everything in general) in the 80's. It's become everything it was (supposedly) against in the 60'/70's.

reply

True. I'm mostly thinking about its impact up until around the 90s.

reply

folsum prison blues
a day in the life
like a rolling stone
as long as i can see the light
god only knows

reply

God Only Knows is a good one! I'm not usually the biggest fan of The Beach Boys, but that song is sublime!

And I cited A Day In The Life, so I'm glad someone else agrees.

reply

a day in the life is just about the perfect song. paul mccartney is a big fan of god only knows.

reply

Since Black music seems to be persistently overlooked in these threads, I'll cite another classic tune, worthy of consideration: Papa Was a Rolling Stone, by The Temptations.

reply

My favorite Doors song is Break on Through (To the Other Side).

reply

That song is perfect indeed. 10/10
