There are a number of things. The person being babysat is not mature enough to be left alone or is living with a mental disability. Only a parent/guardian can task somebody with that, knowing what their child needs.

There used to be a really funny video on Youtube called “The Babysitter” where Brie Larson plays a babysitter about 18 years old and she is hired by the parents of a guy who is about in his late 20s to babysit him. Molly Hagan plays the mom. But the original version of the video seemed to disappear by the time Captain Marvel was released.

I can’t believe that there are adults that still repeat this stupid shit.

They go through puberty, and mature physically earlier. Mentally they are not any more mature than boys their age. That is just someone they tell each other as an excuse to date older guys.

I would say it is an old world thing. In the past girls were expected to take care of siblings and do housework etc so they probably did to some degree "mature" faster due to those responsibilities. I would not say it is the case now though.
