While not a movie, The Terror (2018 AMC television series, season one), fits the bill.

White Squall (96)

Not just the whole ‘mastering’ the Ocean thing but that terrifying bit where they all learn the Ocean will do what it does no matter how good a sailor you are.

Very good movie.
