Remember in 80s & 90s films

When there would be a song or songs, attached to the film that would become a huge global hit ?

How come that fizzled out? Aside from James Bond, I don't recall anything after Titanic.

reply

Because song writers cost money and most movies would rater spend money on the visuals rather than the audio, after all do you remember the songs or the ecplosions?

And many many people hate musicals so any investment in new songs had to be justified

Perhaps it’s a good thing, I remember those dark dark days.

Bryan Adams tormented the charts with a Robin Hood song and Kevin Costner clips in the video.
(Everything I Do) I Do It For You stayed at number one for 16 weeks. (UK)

Whitney Houston warbled along with that Bodyguard song and Kevin Costner clips in the video.
I Will Always Love You stayed at number one for 10 weeks. (UK)

Wet Wet Wet bored the charts with an old 60’s song, thankfully Kevin Costner wasn’t in Four Weddings and a Funeral, but Hugh Grant was. 😡
Love Is All Around stayed at number one for 15 weeks. (UK)

I’m sure it was just as bad elsewhere!

Dishonourable mentions: -
Stevie Wonder - I Just Called To Say I Love You (Lady In Red)
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go Ooooooooooon (Titanic - Spoiler the boat sinks)

reply

I get a sudden sinking feeling whenever I hear that Celine Dion song.

Top Gun was more of a music video than a movie. I don't miss it.

reply

Avengers has a catchy song.

The most recent thing I can think of, and it's actually a streaming show, is "Agatha All Along" from Scarlett Witch.

But yeah I totally remember what you're talking about. I also remember how, in addition to the Official Soundtrack and Scores, occasionally a "Music inspired by the Film X" were a fairly regular thing.

Something I've noticed is Classic Rock and 80's pop music is still used a lot in TV and films and perhaps because of that it feels like the movie song is no longer a thing. When in fact they are just using the same type of music they used to because modern music sucks.

I’m a little surprised Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga wasn’t a huge global chart hit this year, considering the movie it’s from.

Recently an old Kate Bush song got revived by an episode of Stranger Things. It actually put it back on the charts. Does that count?

I remember when Batman and Robin came out in 1997 there was some music video with someone singing about Gotham City. I’m like WTF?
