Streaming Services releasing shows one episode at a time...

Is this driving anyone else nuts? My favorite thing about streaming used to be that they would release an entire season of their shows at once, and then you could watch the episodes as fast or as slowly as you you wanted. Personally, I always preferred to set aside several hours on a Sunday, and watch a whole season like one long movie. Now they all seem to be taking that option away by releasing half a season at a time, months apart, or releasing one episode at a time, weekly.

I'm home sick with Covid right now, so I have nothing but time on my hands for the next few days. Currently four shows I love ('Stranger Things,' 'The Boys,' 'Barry,' and 'The Orville') have new episodes out, but none of them have a whole season available to watch. It's frustrating.

Does anyone else hate this? I mean, if they're gonna release one episode at a time then what's the point? We're basically just back to what cable was.

reply

Yeah this drives me nuts. Talk shows and things like that yes, but not a regular show. It does go against what streaming sites should be and also takes us back to cable practically yes. It is like cable though because most services have the same add on packages available. Reminds me of it anyways.

Not that annoying for the simple reason that most shows need time to be appreciated by the audience, some shows start out real nice then end up being a total disaster, I would find it annoying if they were handed to me in one go thus killing my eagerness to watch them in the first place if they turn out bad. I had lined up many shows for later screening before I realized they were not worth my time.

reply

Not sure I understand your point. How would each season being released at once affect your ability to watch a few episodes and see if it's worth continuing to watch?

reply

I don't want to get involved in the first place and waste my time on it, it's best for me to look elsewhere. Having said that, I'm not against Netflix releasing some of their shows integrally.

reply

Yeah but how is that affected by how much or how little they release at once? I mean, lets say there's a show with two episodes out, and a show with the whole first season out. How does the availability of more or less episodes tell you whether or not a show is worth your time?

reply

It does not whatsoever, but imo staggering releases gets word of mouth spreading more as opposed to one time releases that get briefly discussed and then get shelved, it's the popularity/ shelf life factor.

reply

Ahhhh, ok. I see what you're saying now.

reply

I prefer the old-fashioned way.

reply

Times have changed.
Back in the days, we couldn't wait till next week to find out what happened.
Now, including me, I need the whole series so I can watch in one maybe 2 sittings.

I will say this, if streaming devices do want to show shows episode at a time. I recommend a new episode each night. just imagine NBC the Burning Bed, we watched that over a few days. Not over a month.

But also, I've learned with most shows to just let it air and binge it after the 8 week Run.
Now I said most. The Boys is gonna have me on a week per week viewing, LOL.

reply

Yeah it's crazy. They claim that binge watching detracts but I say give the user that choice.

Yeah, exactly. I understand that a lot of people like to view shows more slowly than I do, but if the season is released all at once they still have that option to watch as slowly as they choose. At least give me the option to watch it all at once, if I prefer.

reply

I'm retired so time is on my side when it comes to binge watching. It has a cohesion that watching a series week by week just can't equal. It's like watching an epic film.

reply

Yes, it’s annoying.
I’m going to wait to watch Obi-Wan Kenobi β€˜til the third week of June because it’s a weekly release and will wrap up its run then…very annoying.

I often just wait β€˜till all the eps are released and then I’ll binge the whole thing over a weekend.

reply

Yeah that's usually what I do too. It's just particularly annoying right now because I'm quarantined in my house with nothing to do until Thursday, and there's 4 shows I'd LOVE to be watching right now during this time, but they're all only partially released. So now I'm sitting here with my thumb up my ass watching 'Seinfeld' for the hundredth time, ugghh.

reply

Sorry you are sick but if you’re vaxxed and healthy in general you should be solid pretty soon, half my peeps had this thing and walked it off in a week. My job makes us test a few times a month and I was cleared again today but most of us will get hit with it sooner or later I’d bet.
Just hang in thereπŸ‘

The Boys S3 is releasing week to week, that’s another one I’d watch 4 hours of tonight but I’ll just wait to binge the whole thing in July.

reply

Oh I'm fine. I had a fever and flu-like symptoms Thursday and Friday, got my positive test result back Saturday, and my company is making me stay home until this Thursday. But my symptoms are 90% gone already. More than anything I'm just boooooored.

reply

Well at least you have Seinfeld, you can’t go wrong with SeinfeldπŸ˜„

Make β€˜em all remember your name on Thursday dude!

Be well.

reply

Well it takes place in New York and nothing good comes out of New York.

I'm kidding.

reply

No, I get you, it’s mostly true…The museums and parks in NYC are truly great and beautiful but a lot of it really sucks…you always have to look over your shoulder.

I doubt there is a more pretty and insanely violent city on the planet.

Still. There’s a good deal of artwork and history to check out.

reply

No, I'm being serious. I like New York. Sure it's got some crime, but it's pretty cool. I'll take NY over LA any day.

reply

Mad Men takes place in New York and Mad Men was awesome.

reply

I was joking.

Flexibility is the key to life happiness.

Don't get what you want? Move on, find something else similar, or even better yet, try a new thing, and grow.
Show not there? Dig deeper for a show like it, or complete opposite, just for fun. Plenty of streams out there. Many free stuff with ads on Vudu, Youtube free full movies(adblocker!), and many more.

Rip that oyster open!!!

I’m from the olden days where a new episode once a week was the norm.

"Who shot J.R.?"

reply

Oh my God, that was the absolute LONGEST, agonizing, hair pulling, suspenseful, summer wait for a new season to begin in the fall in the history of television!!!! 😱😱😱😱

reply

Yup! Probably the most memorable, season finale cliffhanger ever. ;)

reply

Oh, absolutely. Without question.
