Why don't "cows" have a real name?

They have a collective name (cattle) and they have a scientific name (B. taurus), but they don't have a common, singular name specific to them like every other animal (that I know of) does. "Cow" is a generic term that refers to various female mammals (for example, a female moose is also a "cow").

A horse, a dog, a cat, a deer, a squirrel, a mosquito, a goat, a sheep, a chicken, a... cattle?

That term excludes about half of them (the males).

Cows used to be Aurochs 10,000 years ago.

(read like James Bond) "The name is Cow, Brown Cow."
as in "How now Brown Cow."

Of course, if the cow is religious, then it's ... Holy Cow!

Thank you. I agree with you. And this has always bothered me. A cow is not a bull and bull is not a cow.

The only good thing about it: at least there's one example of gender binary which can't be "cancelled" by the unisex crowd.

Don't try to understand 'em
Just rope 'em, throw, and brand 'em
