HAL was horrifying if you think about it. The whole A.I. thing is scary.

No, it's science fiction, and "hard" science fiction based on the science of the day. No fantasty or magical elements at all. The computer doing what it did was based on early speculation about Artificial Intelligence, and speculation continues along those same lines.

Yes, the alien intelligence could be called "mystical" or magical, but I disagree, the actions of the aliens simply mysterious. Unknown. Not explained by magic.

If you consider a forced evolution of a man by a long extinct intelligent alien species a horror than...yes.

The HAL part utilizes elements of suspense often found in Horror movies, but overall the movie itself wouldn't be considered a Horror
