If anyone here works at Yahoo I challenge you to give me a logical reason why they require a mobile phone number in
order to get an account.
shareorder to get an account.
shareI cannot access my Ticketmaster account, which I've had for years, because they now want to send me a text to verify, and I don't text. The day comes when there something I just have to buy on Ticketmaster, I'll upgrade my phone account for one month to accept text messages, and do this one-time verification procedure.
shareWhy do they assume everyone has a cell phone?
shareI was pretty annoyed, it took several e-mails to finally get someone to admit they can't verify by a regular phone call, even though it was suggested that this was the case.
shareAgree, it's annoying. I have a simple cell phone for emergencies. My computer does everything I need it to. I have no need to carry the Internet around in my pocket.
I have a cell phone, but it is not a smartphone (it is a flip phone). I do not have a landline. I've never sent a text message. It would only be $5 more a month to add text service, but I have never needed it until this Ticketmaster verification thing.
shareHow do you manage to find a mobile phone provider tariff/contract that doesent do text messages?
How much does it cost you a month?
consumercellular.com
I pay $15/month (with tax = about $18/month) but that is for only 250 minutes/month, both sent and received calls count (the clock runs even if someone is calling me). But in my case, that's all I need (I prefer e-mail for communication).
You guys!!!!!! This is 2021, you NEED the internet in your pocket and calling is long gone. It’s all about texting now. Cant wait for you to open yourselves to this wonderfully addicting world of Iphones.
Do it!!
Good Grief!
Is that average for America?
I pay about £4.20/month (about $5.50) for 500 minutes ,5000 texts and 500mb of data.
and the clock only runs on outgoing.
Is it a satphone or something?
"I have a simple cell phone for emergencies."
It doesent do text messages?
You dont need smart/ data / internet etc for that
It doesn't have a "keyboard." You have to do the 1,2,3 thing on each letter to form a word.
I'm not interested enough to become proficient at it. I can phone or email. Have no need to text. I'm not "connected" on that level.
hey , dont text if you dont want to :)
That phone could recieve a verification number in a text from yahoo though, which you'd type in the website to prove your id .
Which is what the OP has some kind of issue with
> Why do they assume everyone has a cell phone?
It's even worse. In past years I'd drive to Cincinnati in the summer, get a hotel room, and catch a series of the Reds' home games. Tickets were easy -- buy them online and print them, and they scanned the bar code at the game. Now they've stopped doing that, you have to use an app. I use a simple flip phone, similar to nyctc7's, but that wouldn't work -- the Reds assume everyone not only has a cell phone, but a smart phone. Well, no big deal this year -- they're also requiring everyone to wear masks, and I'm not going to sit there and wear one for three hours straight. But if the COVID restrictions are ever lifted I guess I'll just have to plunk down some cash.
> The day comes when there something I just have to buy on Ticketmaster, I'll upgrade my phone account for one month to accept text messages
I haven't looked at it in a long time, but from what I remember Google Voice is free and you can receive a text with it.
Also, you can send a text via email if you ever need to. This web page explains it and is worth reading for the information about the differences between texting and MMS:
https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-send-a-text-from-your-email-account/
This page looks up the carrier for a phone number, tells you whether it's a cell phone or not, and gives the email addresses to use for both text and MMS:
https://www.freecarrierlookup.com/
The process is not immediate; when I tried this with my own cell phone it took about ten minutes for the message to arrive. My carrier is AT&T, maybe other carriers are faster.
EDIT: I had tried that in June and it took ten minutes then. I just tried it again. This time it took 26 minutes.
This is becoming more common place yet 46% of people still have land lines and 54 mobile. I find it so irritating. Maybe if enough people complain they'll knock it off. I know some people who have given up their mobile phones and their lives got better.
shareThey are snoopy bastards.
Simple.
Now you can move on with your life.
I'm happy for you.
Have you ever tried just entering a bunch of zeroes? Like 000-000-0000? I don't know if it will work with Yahoo, but I've had some success with this on other sites.
shareThey do it to help prevent bots creating millions of accounts and selling them to the dark web for nefarious purposes
shareI challenge you to logically explain to me how requiring a cell phone number can prevent bots.
shareI said *help* prevent .
Its just another hoop to jump through same as the capcha.
The serious account farmer will contract these out to russian ip-phone / simulator sites.
Imagine how fewer sock puppets thered be on this site if you had to have your shit together enough to recieve a text on a new phone number every time.
i lost a long time hotmail account because there wasn't mobile number attached to it. i have moved on.
share"give me a logical reason why they require a mobile phone number in ....."
Its for security ,recovery and ID reasons
Why is this a problem for you?
I can not think of one logical reason because there aren't any. I have been reading this and other threads you have started and acertained that you are a person of great wisdom.
