If anyone here works at Yahoo I challenge you to give me a logical reason why they require a mobile phone number in
order to get an account.

The day comes when there something I just have to buy on Ticketmaster, I'll upgrade my phone account for one month to accept text messages, and do this one-time verification procedure.

shareAgree, it's annoying. I have a simple cell phone for emergencies. My computer does everything I need it to. I have no need to carry the Internet around in my pocket.
I have a cell phone, but it is not a smartphone (it is a flip phone). I do not have a landline. I've never sent a text message. It would only be $5 more a month to add text service, but I have never needed it until this Ticketmaster verification thing.

I pay $15/month (with tax = about $18/month) but that is for only 250 minutes/month, both sent and received calls count (the clock runs even if someone is calling me). But in my case, that's all I need (I prefer e-mail for communication).
You guys!!!!!! This is 2021, you NEED the internet in your pocket and calling is long gone. It’s all about texting now. Cant wait for you to open yourselves to this wonderfully addicting world of Iphones.

and the clock only runs on outgoing.

You dont need smart/ data / internet etc for that
It doesn't have a "keyboard." You have to do the 1,2,3 thing on each letter to form a word.
I'm not interested enough to become proficient at it. I can phone or email. Have no need to text. I'm not "connected" on that level.

That phone could recieve a verification number in a text from yahoo though, which you'd type in the website to prove your id .

It's even worse. In past years I'd drive to Cincinnati in the summer, get a hotel room, and catch a series of the Reds' home games. Tickets were easy -- buy them online and print them, and they scanned the bar code at the game. Now they've stopped doing that, you have to use an app. I use a simple flip phone, similar to nyctc7's, but that wouldn't work -- the Reds assume everyone not only has a cell phone, but a smart phone. Well, no big deal this year -- they're also requiring everyone to wear masks, and I'm not going to sit there and wear one for three hours straight. But if the COVID restrictions are ever lifted I guess I'll just have to plunk down some cash.

I haven't looked at it in a long time, but from what I remember Google Voice is free and you can receive a text with it.

The process is not immediate; when I tried this with my own cell phone it took about ten minutes for the message to arrive. My carrier is AT&T, maybe other carriers are faster.
EDIT: I had tried that in June and it took ten minutes then. I just tried it again. This time it took 26 minutes.
