Do you find subtitles enhance your movie-watching experience?

I usually never use subtitles unless I am watching a foreign language film. A while ago I started putting the subtitles on while I watched movies and I find that by reading the dialogue I pick up on a lot of subtleties and points that I had overlooked during earlier viewings of the same movies.

I'm not hearing impaired and I do not need the subtitles. I just find I sometimes tune out what the actors are saying, or the actors are mumbling, or visuals distract me, or simply that subtle points revealed in dialogue do not come across as well when I am only hearing them.

I'd say that using the subs has increased my enjoyment of movies by about half.

I absolutly hate subtitles in English language films. They generally don't quite match the dialogue and they are very very distracting.
But with non-English dialogue I generally read the subtitles without being aware I'm doing so.

reply

I absolutely hate that subtitles almost never match what is being said, be they English language or foreign language.

reply

I've noticed that occasionally but if I don't really speak the language it doesn't bother me. I imagine that sometimes, as with novels, a literal translation wouldn't work.

reply

Depends on the type of film. It can ruin a lot of the punchlines of jokes while watching a comedy flick.

at some point in the past year, i started using headphones, & when i did that i found i could do without them. up to that point, when i'd been using fairly low-end speakers, i'd almost always needed subtitles - i missed too much dialogue without them.

i still need them whenever i'm watching a film from the uk or ireland - i get lost in heavy accents pretty easily.

My 650s were made in Ireland.

Lol, you're right, I'll rephrase it - The Germans know how to design quality goods.

BECAUSE YOU'RE LIVING IN THE WALLS OF ANDYKING'S HOUSE?

reply

often. for foreign, including british/etc, or when the audio is poor. its a great adjunct. there are films employing actors who are fairly indiscernible in their speech.

reply

Yes
I nearly always use subs, a lot of these actors are marble mouths and it's likely my hearing isn't as sharp as it used to be

Pardon?

I said 'mwamamawmwamah'

Is that a line from ‘Tenet’ 2020?

You're good!

Seriously, the concepts that Nolan was exploring were amazing, however, the sound engineer needed to be sacked.

I do for languages that I’m not proficient in.

LMAO...FUCK...THAT IS SO STUPID...BUT I LAUGHED OUT LOUD...KUDOS.👍🏾

reply

Generally only use them when the movie is in a language I am not fluent in.

I have used them with my nieces and nephews to help them with reading. Will even turn the volume off completely so they have to read if they want to watch tv at Auntie's house.
