Are pets worth the hassle?

Expense: food and vets.
Time: walks.
Noise: barking, meowing.
Lost sleep.
Mess: poop, pee, drool and hair.
Some need constant attention.

reply

Your list implies that only dogs and cats qualify as pets.

I once had a tarantula as a pet. It was a birthday gift from a girlfriend.

reply

My 7 year old daughter as asked if she can have one when she’s old enough. In her opinion, “spiders are adorable.” Mrs K begs to differ.

reply

Tarantulas are fascinating to watch and study.

reply

I'm sure that she'd take great care of it, but I don't think that the missus will go for it.

reply

SHOW HER ARACHNOPHOBIA...PROBLEM SOLVED.🙂

reply

Cool movie but easier said than done.

reply

She'd be rooting for the spiders - she really has no fear, which is ok over here (UK spiders are a bit pathetic), but I've warned her to be more careful when we go abroad.

reply

Hell yes!

To me at least, I love animals and need them around.

reply

Yes!

Cats are low maintenance. For a truly low maintenance pet, just have a feral cat adopt you, like I did. Her name is Harry, and she has a heated house under my deck. Note: I named her before I could get close enough to know she was a she. I feed her twice a day, and she gives me an
immense amount of affection.

Expense: food
Time: very little, maybe 10 - 15 minutes of bonding each day
Noise: you think meowing is noise? Seriously??
Mess: none

I have a feral cat who lives in my back garage, which is a stand alone building out by the woods. We have had her for 6 years since she was very young. She is totally dependent on us for food and water and knows we take care of her but she won't come near us. We caught her in a kind trap and had her spayed and at that time we probably should have tried to tame her, but we didn't, thinking she would come around. She is a gorgeous black and white long hair and how she keeps herself well groomed is a mystery to me, but she does.

reply

feel lucky wish I had a feral cat mine died now I have pests again

reply

Put out food. That's what attracted my Harry, my feral cat.

😎

reply

love too but live in rural area

reply

There are cats everywhere, even in rural areas. Of course, you could just break down and buy one. Or check the paper, or online, and see if someone is giving away one.

😺

reply

again rural no paper or someone having a box at store

reply

So go online.

reply

the food attracts rats as well. i mean for some theyre pets as well...

reply

And raccoons - they love to steal my cat's food.

reply

raccoons are cute :)
we dont have any in my region.

reply

Meat attracts rats. Dry cat food generally does not.

Interesting. Mine won't let me come too close to her when I'm walking around on my deck, but will jump up on me when
I'm lying on the chaise lounge on the deck. She will then allow me to stroke and scratch her for 10 to 20 minutes. She is leery of me when I'm vertical, but not so much when I'm horizontal. Go figure.

Your back garage? You have a front garage also?

😎

reply

Well kind of - there is one building with an apartment on top and then an addition in the back toward the woods.

reply

Dueling garages, eh? Excellent!

I had a cat that I loved dearly; she had a really great personality.
But I would say that the amount of joy she gave me was equal to the amount of stress, between her illnesses, messes ("accidents"), and general expense.

And, when she had it be put down (bowel cancer), it was devastating.

I wouldn't choose to go through it again..... 😿

reply

I just had to put one of my cats down a month ago. He was diabetic and suddenly took a turn for the worse. It was a hard thing to do.

reply

Sorry for your loss. 😿 I had a friend who spent $5000 in one year trying to save a diabetic cat. If you take care of them in the right way, it isn't cheap.

reply

yes

reply

Cats yes. Low maintenance, high love.
