Caddyshack/National Lampoons Vacation or Stripes/Ghostbusters

What do you think is the better pair of comedies? The reason I grouped them together is because all 4 came out right around the same time and both Caddyshack and National Lampoons Vacation were directed by Harold Ramis and both starred Chevy Chase and Brian Doyle-Murray while both Stripes and Ghostbusters were directed by Ivan Reitman and both starred Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.

Stripes/GB. Hard choice but Murray beats Chevy literally and figuratively.

Yeah for me it’s Caddyshack/National Lampoons Vacation as well.

i've never seen caddyshack. weird gap for me to have as a child of the 80s, but somehow i've managed to never see it.

i was going to watch mediocre horror film 'the pact' before bed tonight...but maaaybe i'll do caddyshack instead. i'm pretty sure it's on tubi.

reply

Caddyshack is very good just the humor is subtle at times.

I have to go Caddyshack/Vacation. I just didn't care for Stripes. I'm not a fan of Chevy Chase, but he isn't the main in Caddyshack so that helps. Also Murray is fantastic in Caddyshack.

reply

I'm going to be difficult I like NLV & Ghostbusters over the other two films.

I wasn't crazy about Stripes at all.

reply

Yeah out of the four I’d put Stripes last but I still enjoyed it. My biggest complaint is that the sex and nudity was just gratuitous. If it made the movie better then I would be fine with it, but it didn’t.

reply

It wasn't required I agree. I also remember it being overly long or at least it felt like it to me and it felt very episodic in the way it is put together. Almost like a series of skits or like 30 min TV sitcom eps strung together.

Going from memory here as I saw it ages ago.

You probably saw the extended cut which is about 20 minutes longer. I’m a bit torn on the extended cut because the extended cut does add in a few funny moments and it clears up a plot hole that the original cut had, however it also has some filler and there is a sex scene when Murray and Ramis are in Germany with the two female MPs and it almost feels like a soft core porno. And the thing is we already had a sex scene between these characters so it felt pointless.

reply

I may have seen both at some point I can't recall. Is it the scene where the female MP takes her bra off in that weird military vehicle? I recall even at the time it seemed unnecessary.

reply

Eh I don’t remember either PJ Soles or Sean Young getting naked in the RV but there was a rather unnecessary sex scene just prior to them getting in the RV which was only available in the extended cut. Again I’ll take the extended cut because it does add in a couple of legitimately funny moments but there is a lot of filler.

All are films I own and watched multiple times. I will go with Stripes and Ghostbusters.

reply

Out of those four movies, the only one I like is "Ghostbusters". And I like it a LOT!

It's as wonderful as the other three are disappointing.
