Should be interesting to see how the future decides to rewrite the past, you certainly can't get away with an all white cast anymore, but putting a POC in a degraded role such as kitchen servant is equally offensive.
This is also why I'm not going to watch the Lord of the Rings tv show. Amazon is going to spend nearly half a billion dollars on the first season with a diverse cast when Tolkein's world was nearly all white. It's the most expensive act of virtue signaling ever.
Did he actually specify white?
I mean , there wernt any pictures in his books , so we've only got the text to go on.
We might assume that seeing he was writing in mid 20th centuary england , from a leafy cottage in the country he only saw white faces, and hence that *might* be what he was picturing.
But if he didnt specify that , its open season surely?
Its not set in cambidgeshire , its set in middle earth.
Cultural bias when reading books, it's actually funny to me how authors these days explicitly state race and sexuality; but in the past the character's races were whatever the hell you imagined them to be, as were their sexualities. Though a black bisexual don quixote riding around in Asian Homosexual Spain might only make sense in your own mind.
Racists usually go claiming if race isn't specified then it is implied that the character is white... of course the racists we're talking about are also the ones insisting we change historical figures to different colors.
