Sterilizing of linens and such that are used during the delivery maybe? It's a good question.

I remember reading once that way back it was to give any 'menfolk' something to go away and do to keep them out of the way, so that the women could concentrate on taking care of business without distraction. Don't know if it's true.

Up until 1900 almost 100% of births were at home, so not really unplanned. And yes, hot water was to sterilize any instruments used during the delivery and when it started cooling down to clean up after the birth. A newborn baby needed a bath - not something to do with cold water.

They really needed a cup of tea! ☕

reply

The don't have hot water dispenser.

So they could boil the baby alive ! Witches !!!

I thought this was going to be a joke.

I've witnessed two births from quite close, both were C-sections (this has become very common in the last couple decades from what I read afterwards)

The first time I held my Lady's hands up near her head while she crushed my hands, I could only see her face and there was a small curtain set up to block whatever was going on 'over there'

The doctor and Nurses specifically told me NOT to look over the curtain...So of course like a damn fool I did

Forget those High School anatomy textbooks, we are all grey inside and I couldn't tell one organ from another

The second time I didn't peek over the little curtain at all, I just let her crush my hands

i did not look and i am glad i didn't. 😊😊
