Creepiest word used instead of "kill" or "murder" in fiction?

I'll have to go with the word they use in the book "The Giver" (it's sort of a spoiler so I won't put it here) or "unperson" from "1984".

From The Shining (1980) -- Delbert Grady's ghost talks to Jack Torrance:

My girls, sir, they didn't care for the Overlook at first. One of them actually stole a pack of matches, and tried to burn it down. But I "corrected" them sir. And when my wife tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I "corrected" her.

I used to think the word "defenestration" meant something other than what it actually does.
