Chess
Anybody play?
shareI kinda push the pieces around the board, but I don't think someone who knows what they're doing would call what I do "playing chess."
I met Garry Kasparov once. Does that count?
I'm not sure. Ive been playing my brother all night. Well for two games. Then he gave up, then I started playing myself. I thought it wouldn't work, but it does.
shareI haven't used it in a while, but from what I remember Chessmaster is a pretty good piece of software. Lots of features, and you can set it at anything from clueless patzer to world champion level of play.
shareI know. But I find chess is kinda like poker. I hate online poker, even with real opponents. You need to be there.
shareThe problem I have with chess software is a visual thing. If I play a hundred games on the computer I'll improve, but only for games played on the computer. The combinations, threats, et cetera that I'll recognize on the 2D computer display, I won't see for the same positions on a real, 3D chessboard. In order to get that improvement I have to play the game on a real chessboard, looking at it and thinking about my next move, and only using the computer to enter my move and get my opponent's move.
shareI agree, I think. 2d chess is completely different to 3 d chess. I find I'm better in real life compared to computer style. But in the end it's the same game. I probably just need to play more. I only just got back into it. Tis hard to find people to play against.
sharetried to learn london system lazy casual style, now i'm trying to casually learn the italian game, giuoco (joke'o) piano for black because I play that a lot with black anyways even when I was playing london system with white.
shareI just tried playing online chess. It did my head in. So many accidental moves. Might be cause my phone screen is cracked, but still. Fuck that.
shareI tried to play chess against some program on the computer and could choose the level of difficulty, but I got the impression the computer was always going to win no matter. Isn't that what computers do?
shareYes I used to play inter-school competitions back in the day when my mind worked a lot better for chess than it does these days. As a young adult I was put off playing by older opponents who kept on insisting on "one more game". Now it's Windows 7 Chess Titans for me.
i'm terrible at it. whatever mind it takes to be able to achieve even base level competence at chess, i don't have it. i find playing it miserable, honestly. i can't map out moves, sort out strategies, and each time i play it just turns into dreary slog where i push the pieces around while waiting for my eventual humiliation.
which is to say i don't like playing it much.
I learnt when I was really young, I think that helps.
sharemy dad tried to get me into it as a kid, and even then i found it a slog. i just lack that ability to map things out mentally. i've often wondered how i'd fare on tests where you have to rotate objects mentally (i think that must be related to the ability to excel at things like chess, no?) - very poorly i bet.
It's not a game for everyone and that's okay. If you can't visualize the board and see several moves ahead with the various combinations in your mind then it's a struggle.
