StoneKeeper's Super Awesome Movie Guessing Game: I Recommend THIS Movie #1095 [Ocean Waves (1993) Winner: MonStar]

I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guess, I will give a hint that connects your guess with the movie I have in mind.

Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, actor, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve Cabbage Patch Kids. Also, you can use Metascore color or rating, Rotten Tomatoes score, any award wins or nominations in common, same number of words in the title, plot keywords.

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints and 13 guesses, the point goes to the OP and he/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 votes. Otherwise, add a bonus hint.
- Maximum 2 guesses per player per hint.
- Can't edit a guess once posted. Delete ONLY

MonStar wins with Ocean Waves (1993), also known by its Japanese title Umi ga Kikoeru (I Can Hear the Sea). I discovered this movie quite by accident years and years ago when I was trying to buy a Korean movie on DVD but ended up with a bootleg DVD from Hong Kong containing this film. I watched it anyway, never having heard of it before, and I won't be exaggerating when I say I fell in love with it. It's hard to explain exactly why. It's not a plot-heavy movie, it's very much a character movie, about life as a teenager growing into adulthood and experiencing your first love. It feels so real that it fills me with nostalgia every time. It's one of the least-known Studio Ghibli movies, but I really can't recommend it highly enough. See it if you can.

I must have some details mixed up because I'm not getting anything that aligns with all of those hints.

Ocean Waves (1993 TV Movie)

reply

You win! Well done!

reply

YOU FU- er, I mean good job.

reply

I had the same problem. "No results." After trying short films only, I unchecked Feature Films and everything else. One result. TV movie.

reply

I was wondering what it was that Fred was stuck on, but before I could talk to him about it you guessed the movie. Was that it, Fred? That it's a TV movie?

reply

That was basically why I didn't see it before - I wasn't searching properly for it. Is it the host's responsibility to specify the type of movie for the round, especially when two people posted the correct answer seconds apart? At the very least it's a clever way to play.

reply

It honestly didn't even occur to me that a TV movie might not show up in a regular search. I guess all I can do is advise that while using the IMDb advanced search, it's best to check both the boxes for feature films and TV movies, since the latter are, after all, movies.

reply

It's the impetus of the players to figure out what kind of movie the host has in mind along with the title itself, especially if it falls well above the 3500 margin. All feature length movies are fair game.

reply

Seriously, it's a great movie. Good game all around. I don't think it's necessarily the host's responsibility to specify (outside of the established 3500 votes rule) whether or not the mystery film technically listed as a feature, TV movie, documentary, etc. Good on you for putting on your thinking cap.

reply

I'm glad you know of the movie. It's so good but so little-known. It deserves to be more widely appreciated. I hope somebody will check it out due to my recommending it here.

reply

I have the next game ready to go now, if the time is not an issue for the players. It could wait until tomorrow too.

reply

I'm up for it if anyone else is.

reply

I'm up.

reply

New game is started!
