StoneKeeper's Super Awesome Movie Guessing Game: I recommend THIS Movie #1077 [It Happened in Europe (1948), guessed by MonStar]

I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guess, I will give a hint that connects your guess with the movie I have in mind.

Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, actor, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve Cabbage Patch Kids. Also, you can use Metascore color or rating, Rotten Tomatoes score, any award wins or nominations in common, same number of words in the title, plot keywords.

MonStar climbs another rung up the scoreboard with It Happened In Europe (1948), also known by its alternative English title Somewhere in Europe. The movie is about a group of children orphaned by WWII aimlessly roaming the countryside in Hungary. They eventually show up at an abandoned castle occupied by an anti-fascist musician laying low there, and under his guidance they regain some structure in their lives and remake themselves as an anti-fascist resistance group. It's considered one of the all-time great Hungarian movies. Highly recommend.

It has to be 4 words.

Fred already guessed that one.

That's it! You got it! Phew. And before we got to the 12th hint too (not counting the bonus hint).

It Happened in Europe, also known as Somewhere in Europe, is about a group of children orphaned by WWII aimlessly roaming the countryside in Hungary. They eventually show up at an abandoned castle occupied by an anti-fascist musician laying low there, and under his guidance they regain some structure in their lives and remake themselves as an anti-fascist resistance group. Since the original title, Valahol Európában, was not 4 words, I was reluctant to post it. But the director was nominated in both venues mentioned, and it was Hungarian.

Nothing else fit.

Yeah, a couple times through the game I considered clarifying that I was specifically referring to the official title used by IMDb. Even that was problematic for me because the movie is also known by another three-word English title (under which I rented it from Netflix a few years ago). But it was literally the only thing I could find in common with the first movie guessed on this thread (other than something ridiculous like "both made in the 20th century", which would eliminate 20 years' worth of movies but would still be way too broad), so I went with it lol.

Seriously, congrats on a hard-won victory! You're really making a name for yourself here.

A bit of a self-criticism: I made a few blunders in the course of this particular round which I think made it more difficult than it really had to be. For instance, when hownos guessed Uncertain Glory (1944), I missed a chance to name the 1940s as the decade of the movie I was recommending, which would have significantly helped narrow it down a few hints earlier than I did. Then when LauraGrace guessed a movie about Rasputin, I dismissed it since it contradicted two hints when I could have grabbed onto it nonetheless to say the movie was set in Eastern Europe, which would have significantly helped since everyone was guessing Western European movies. Similarly, when MonStar guessed a Greek movie, I was tempted to say Eastern Europe then, but for some reason I missed that chance too even though it didn't violate any of the previous hints.

So, apologies for the difficulty of this one. MonStar pulled through in the end though, so it all turned out well.

You can see this film online with English subtitles for free here, Valahol Európában (Directed by Radványi Géza, 1947, 1 hour, 41 minutes ):

I've never seen it. In 1947 memories of World War II would still be fresh.

Oh that's good! When I saw it, I had rented it on DVD; I haven't found it available to view online anywhere.

Anyway I definitely recommend it, it's a very good movie.
