You can only watch 7 movies for the rest of your life.

But you can only choose the best film from these genres. What films do you choose? Here are mine:

Drama: Magnolia
Comedy: School of Rock
Horror: Psycho
Action: Die Hard
Animation: Spirited Away
Sci-Fi: Inception
Fantasy: Fantastic Planet

reply

Drama- The Searchers
Comedy - Dr Strangelove
Horror - The Exorcist
Action. Terminator 2
Animation - don't really care. Toy Story
Sci-Fi - The Thing
Fantasy - don't care. Wizard of Oz.

reply

I personally don't like fastasy films either, but I figured there might be enough people on here who do.

reply

I changed mine to Wizard of Oz.

Drama: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
Comedy: This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
Horror: Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Action: First Blood (1982)
Animation: The Lion King (1994) - had to be since I need some music and you didn't include musicals
Sci-Fi: The Fly (1986)
Fantasy: Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

had to be since I need some music and you didn't include musicals

Sorry but I hate musicals.

reply

Good God, have you no soul?

Nah, you are certainly not alone there. But to me a world without movies like Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, Rocky Horror, Grease, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors.. would be a lot less colourful at best and downright depressing at worst.

I don't mind people randomly breaking into song. In fact I might do it myself right now

"All byyyyyy myyyself, don't wanna be, all byyyyyyyy myyyy-eeeee-self"

Maybe not.

reply

The two I liked are "Chicago" and "Oliver!" (1968). Other than those, it's a pass for me. I never even find the music itself to be all that good.

reply

Well, the bad musicals are usually SPECTACULARLY bad, so I do hear you.

Did you not even care for the songs in The Lion King though? I think Elton brought his A game there. Circle of Life gives me a lump in my throat every time I watch that movie.

I think most people would agree with you, but I'll always have a soft spot for a bit of song and dance.

reply

Actually, I like The Lion King. It's a movie that came out when I was young so it's hard to know if I can actually tolerate the music or if I can tolerate it because of the nostalgia.

reply

I was a bit older (20 actually) when it came out and I was ready to be pleasantly entertained by it like I had been with Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and all the older Disney classics. I wasn't at all expecting the music (and the film overall) to capture me like it did. I remember going straight from the cinema to the record store to get the soundtrack. Circle of Life, Just Can't Wait To Be King, Hakuna Matata, Be Prepared, Can You Feel The Love Tonight; I struggle to think of too many other musicals with such a strong collection of songs.

Drama: Taxi Driver
Comedy: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Horror: The Shining
Action: Hard Boiled
Animation: Akira
Sci-Fi: RoboCop
Fantasy: Edward Scissorhands

reply

With the exception of Fear and Loathing, week like a lot of the same films.

reply

Hard boiled! Oh yeah! Love this one.

RoboCop almost made my list

reply

Drama: The Remains of the Day (1993)
Comedy: Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
Horror: Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Action: The Bourne Identity (2002)
I don't watch animated films so I substituted romance.
Romance: Persuasion (2007)
Sci-Fi: Aliens (1986)
Fantasy: Fairytale: A True Story (1997)

reply

The second person to put Aliens for action. I approve.

reply

Drama: Casablanca
Comedy: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Horror: Alien
Action: Predator
Animation: Pinocchio
Sci-Fi: Planet of the Apes (1968)
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings

reply

Easy! I would watch Groundhog Day for all 7 times.

reply

Animation isn't a genre, so I'll substitute for Thriller:

Drama: 12 Angry Men
Comedy: Young Frankenstein
Horror: Psycho
Action: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Thriller: North by Northwest
Sci-Fi: The Empire Strikes Back
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings

reply

12 Angry Men is a masterpiece.

reply

You're right, animation is not a genre. It does get treated as one, for better or worse, although in some cases there are elements that could almost constitute delineation of a specific genre that has no otherwise named identity. Good call though.

But what if we said, these are the genres, and one out of any of them should also be animated? What would your pick be?

reply

North By Northwest would've made a good animated movie, even though I already love the movie how it already is.

reply

LOL WOAH. You're blowing my mind.

reply

Hummm...

Drama: Blood in blood out (1993)
Comedy: Friday (1995)
Horror: Idle hands (1998)
Action: T2: Judgment day (1991)
Animation: The Land before time (1988)
Sci-fi: Cloud atlas (2012)
Fantasy: Kung fu hustle (2004)
