Comedy: This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
Horror: Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Action: First Blood (1982)
Animation: The Lion King (1994) - had to be since I need some music and you didn't include musicals
Sci-Fi: The Fly (1986)
Fantasy: Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Nah, you are certainly not alone there. But to me a world without movies like Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, Rocky Horror, Grease, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors.. would be a lot less colourful at best and downright depressing at worst.
I don't mind people randomly breaking into song. In fact I might do it myself right now
"All byyyyyy myyyself, don't wanna be, all byyyyyyyy myyyy-eeeee-self"
Well, the bad musicals are usually SPECTACULARLY bad, so I do hear you.
Did you not even care for the songs in The Lion King though? I think Elton brought his A game there. Circle of Life gives me a lump in my throat every time I watch that movie.
I think most people would agree with you, but I'll always have a soft spot for a bit of song and dance.
Actually, I like The Lion King. It's a movie that came out when I was young so it's hard to know if I can actually tolerate the music or if I can tolerate it because of the nostalgia.
I was a bit older (20 actually) when it came out and I was ready to be pleasantly entertained by it like I had been with Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and all the older Disney classics. I wasn't at all expecting the music (and the film overall) to capture me like it did. I remember going straight from the cinema to the record store to get the soundtrack. Circle of Life, Just Can't Wait To Be King, Hakuna Matata, Be Prepared, Can You Feel The Love Tonight; I struggle to think of too many other musicals with such a strong collection of songs.
Drama: Taxi Driver
Comedy: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Horror: The Shining
Action: Hard Boiled
Animation: Akira
Sci-Fi: RoboCop
Fantasy: Edward Scissorhands
Drama: The Remains of the Day (1993)

I don't watch animated films so I substituted romance.
Romance: Persuasion (2007)
Sci-Fi: Aliens (1986)
Fantasy: Fairytale: A True Story (1997)
Drama: Casablanca
Comedy: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Horror: Alien
Action: Predator
Animation: Pinocchio
Sci-Fi: Planet of the Apes (1968)
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings
Animation isn't a genre, so I'll substitute for Thriller:
Drama: 12 Angry Men
Comedy: Young Frankenstein
Horror: Psycho
Action: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Thriller: North by Northwest
Sci-Fi: The Empire Strikes Back
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings
You're right, animation is not a genre. It does get treated as one, for better or worse, although in some cases there are elements that could almost constitute delineation of a specific genre that has no otherwise named identity. Good call though.
But what if we said, these are the genres, and one out of any of them should also be animated? What would your pick be?

Sci-fi: Cloud atlas (2012)
Fantasy: Kung fu hustle (2004)
