Would John Candy's career have survived the 90s?

A lot of 80s stars really struggled in the 90s.

Chevy Chase was a big failure.
Eddie Murphy went from bomb to bomb and got lucky with Nutty Professor.
Steve Martin did well compared to his other comedians with the Father of The Bride movies but went downhill mid 90s.

I have to think that he wouldn't have done very well, given that his success really was a result of John Hugh's amazing writing. Hugh's also didn't fair well in the 90s, even ditching his name from his movies and writing as Edmond Dantes to perhaps hid his declining skill.

But what do you think? Could he have survived?

reply

He had charisma, comedy chops and was an easily likable big guy...I'd wager he'd still be working steadily

reply

SAY WHAT YOU WILL ABOUT "DEAD YEARS" IN COMEDIANS CAREERS.NO PUN INTENDED.CHASE,MURPHY AND MARTIN ARE ALL STILL WORKING RIGHT NOW.ALL THREE'S CAREERS HAVE BEEN DICTATED BY CHOICE OF MATERIAL AS WELL.SOMEONE LIKE BILL MURRAY HAS BEEN MORE STEADY .EVEN HE HAS HAD SOME DUDS AND DEAD YEARS.I BELIEVE IF THE BIG MAN HAD KEPT GOING,HE WOULD HAVE A LENGTHY RESUME PEPPERED WITH AWESOMENESS.SAME AS THE AFORMENTIONED THREE GUYS.

reply

Yeah, pretty much agree with this, except in sentence-case.

Just something a guy says.

I think he might have tried some serious roles if he lived.

reply

PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES IS MY FAVORITE CANDY ROLE..HE WOULD HAVE MURDERED SERIOUS ROLES.

Imagine Candy in 10 Cloverfield Lane instead of Goodman
That could have been something!
