Would John Candy's career have survived the 90s?

A lot of 80s stars really struggled in the 90s.

Chevy Chase was a big failure.
Eddie Murphy went from bomb to bomb and got lucky with Nutty Professor.
Steve Martin did well compared to his other comedians with the Father of The Bride movies but went downhill mid 90s.

I have to think that he wouldn't have done very well, given that his success really was a result of John Hugh's amazing writing. Hugh's also didn't fair well in the 90s, even ditching his name from his movies and writing as Edmond Dantes to perhaps hid his declining skill.

But what do you think? Could he have survived?

I don't think his style of comedy would have gone down too well it was getting old hat by the 90's and even now you see the dumb ass comedies like Stiller's, Sandler's etc not doing too well.

Perhaps with a reinvention he may have done ok.

I think so. He was pretty talented as a comedian, but I could see his career fleshing out into more dramatic roles. Even a lot of his best comedies had a mix of comedy and real life themes or undertones.

Eddie Murphy did just fine post 90's. He was in some movies called Shrek that made boatloads of cash and he purposely decided to move on to kids movies rather than stay with what he was best at.
