Movies are a 20th century art form
Most people in film school don't want to be movie directors. They want to do everything else, like make YouTube videos. Nobody cares about movies anymore. Movies seem to have lost power to tell us anything about the human condition. They're just showcases for bad video game graphics. Any poorly written comic book is a good enough vehicle for that. Movies are a narrative art, and narrative has lost its power because we are very divided with competing narratives, so what can we learn from just one? We can beat that by doing as little as watching various cable news shows on TV. Movies are a mature art form. We understand them too well. We've heard the stories and the criticisms, the techniques have been explained to us and there's no more mystery. 2 hours seems like a big investment for something that will most likely be a disappointing trick to keep us just barely interested enough to keep watching and look at ads.
I can name only 4 decent movies from this decade. The Canyons, Spring Breakers, Escape Plan, and Ingrid Goes West. Mel Gibson can make it 5 if he hurries up and makes that Viking movie. I've probably missed some, but I watch a lot and used to watch a lot more. They're all garbage now with obnoxious political messages tacked on everywhere like the whole purpose a movie can be anything except to entertain. We can go elsewhere for that. Anyone can do that, and cheaper.
